iPod no ipod options button in itunes?

I'm trying to set up manual transfer of songs to my ipod (hate the syncing thing) but there is no ipod options button in itunes, or in itunes preferences...any clue how to get it to show up?
 
If you have it selected in the sidebar, then the whole iTunes window is already your options pane. Click the tab for Music at the top, then select Manual Transfer on that screen.

I don't have a Music tab. Seriously. And the window just switches to greyed out looking library when I select the ipod.

The idea of deleting the playlist is so that it will have nothing to sync, hence an error, hence the ability to get the options screen back to normal!
 
I did get an error message, but still no options. I tried restarting my computer + itunes again and this time I get options!

However, apparently it is Windows formatted (makes sense, was my late husband's ipod), and the program to convert it to Mac format gives me errors... I am about ready to throw the ****ing ipod at the wall. /headdesk
