Fake "404 Not Found" pages

Now and then I run into interesting, humorous, or faked "Not Found" (error 404) web pages.

Here are two by Anthony Cox:

1. These Weapons of Mass Destruction cannot be displayed
You get this page if you type weapons of mass destruction in google and click I'm Feeling Lucky.

2. The New York Times story cannot be displayed

Who has found others?

Well this isnt exactly what you were looking for, but -

Angelfire 404 page not found messages:

CDIV (Et tu, Angelfire?)

Sometimes we like to get a little crazy and
type in totally random URLs to see what happens.
This is what happens.

On the internet, no one can hear you scream.

It looks like the typing class your
cat is taking is not 100% successful.

Missing: One Home Page.

Apparently, this page is not
compatible with any browsers.

Some folks can see dead people
- can you see dead pages?

Great, now you've gone and done it. You've
broken the Internet. Way to go!

If at first you don't succeed,
type, type again.

If true happiness can only be achieved
through a state of nothingness,
you're going down the right path.

It only takes one wrong letter to hold
back this page, not a nation of millions.

The page you wanted
is taking a long lunch.

If you're reading this, it
means this page is no more.
It's probably not your fault.

The page you are looking for
has spontaneously combusted.

'I remember when the internet only had a few
pages, and they all worked' - 'Sure, Grampa...'

Aliens must have abducted this page!

Nothing to see here. Move along, buddy.

The page you requested
is taking a coffee break.

Your lucky numbers for today: 4, 0, 4.

If you had a nickel for each time you hit an
incorrect URL, you'd be 5 cents richer right now.

We sent this page to NASA for testing.

This page is only viewable by Jimmy Hoffa, Amelia
Earhart, Jim Morrison, 2Pac and Howard Hughes.

We didn't do it.

If someone makes a webpage and gives
the wrong URL, does it really exist?

There are a few sites dedicated to 404 pages, my fav is http://www.plinko.net/404/

Here is another:
http://www.mindspring.com/%7Eisixtyf.../404_fame.html

Also, mook's (http://www.moock.org) has an interesting one too:
http://moock.org/404/

I personally like exploring for 404 pages, I find that they usually display a bit more of the personality of the designers / developers.

Thumbs down

you know that and the "history of france" page are complete bullcrap, as with all of history nothing is black and white. It's very easy to bend the truth into something like that, but why would anyone waste their time when they just come out looking like an idiot?

You know that page is so horribly off base and historically incorrect I have to point out some of the problems.....

Gallic Wars - Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian.

*ah sorry but those weren't Italians, they were a group called the Romans, and they happened to conquer all of Europe not just France as well as parts of Africa and Asia (middle east.)

Hundred Years War - Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare; "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman." Sainted.

*That war ended in 1453 when France re-took Bordeaux from the English, and after Charles VII, King of France, captured Paris. Before the war, the English controlled a large part of France and by the end the French had expanded taking every English possession but Calais, which they finally retook in 1565. "Mostly lost," heh the war knocked England off the European continent and established France as a major power in the region.

Wars of Religion - France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots

*um the Hugenots were French....would you count the Civil War as an United States victory???

Thirty Years War - France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her.

*France fought alongside the Swedes for ten years along with other allies to finally defeat Austria and force the disintegration of the Holy Roman Empire. France was very much a participant and it did not end in a tie.

American Revolution - In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare; "France only wins when America does most of the fighting."

*I've already pointed out in previous France bashing posts that France was a great aid to the colonies and the majority of weapons used came from France. Without France it is doubtful America would have been victorious, and France was the first to the U.S. as a country.

And that stupid list goes on and on and even jokes about the French soldiers dying. It's sad really that some people are so ignorant.

Many of the web pages that claim to be "the end of the Internet" are amusing too. Just search on that phrase and you'll find dozens of them to choose from.

Thanks, Abstract. Best of all, you can save the source of that page, change the messages (be sure to stick on the html and body tags around the outside if necessary), and have your very own web page that does the same trick with your own personalized messages.

Okay, so in laymen's terms, I can copy the source code, but how do I get it to type out like that? Is that Java code that I see in the source code? I know how to program in C, Matlab, and VB, but I don't know anything about Java (or much about computers).

PS: I don't think I could come up with anything quite as funny. Poor imitation.......coming up!!!

The Javascript code makes it type out like that. So when you open the page in any web browser that has Javascript turned on, it should work. By the way, Javascript is a scripting language, so the source code can be seen within web pages that use it, while the confusingly similarly named Java is a separate programming language.

To make this 404 page work with your own messqages, put your message strings between the var tl=new Array( line and the ); line. Be sure to put backslashes immediately before any single quote or double quote within the message text.

I pasted the code below, with some sample text, to make it easy:

<html>
<body>
<h2>404 File Not Found</h2>

<!-- remove all this and type anything you want here! It must be more than a 512 characters size for it -->
<!-- to work properly with Internet Explorer browsers. Leave some spaces if you do not have enough text. -->

<script type="text/javascript" language="Javascript">

<!-- Here's an example for you. Use if it you want, enjoy! --- alwayswebhosting.com

var tl=new Array(

"Hi, Mom!",
"College is great. I\'m busy partying, I mean studying tonight.",
"Please send me more money for \"necessities\"",
"such as beer, I mean paper and pencils."

);
var speed=80;
var index=0; text_pos=0;
var str_length=tl[0].length;
var contents, row;

function type_text()
{
contents='';
row=Math.max(0,index-6);
while(row<index)
contents += tl[row++] + '\r\n';
document.textform.elements[0].value = contents + tl[index].substring(0,text_pos) + "_";
if(text_pos++==str_length)
{
text_pos=0;
index++;
if(index!=tl.length)
{
str_length=tl[index].length;
setTimeout("type_text()",1500);
}
} else
setTimeout("type_text()",speed);

}
function MM_callJS(jsStr)
{
//v2.0
return eval(jsStr)
}
//-->
</script>
<body onload="type_text();">
<center>
<form name="textform">
<textarea cols="70" rows="8" wrap="soft" readonly>
</textarea>
</form>

</body>
</html>

lmao why not money for a power mac g5 while you're at it

anyway, like Doctor Q said it's JavaScript, relatively easy to learn scripting language. you can do the coolest things with javascript.
another website that's even funnier than that 404 not found page can be found at http://www.kr.tuwien.ac.at/service/uuman/node143.html
that server really needs some prozac

For once medea's actually right. His two posts were a horrible over-reaction to a site I linked to here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...threadid=31190

Strange that it should happen now, a few days after he originally posted them

Ok, merged.....

I've seen that page before as well - pretty silly stuff. I took it only for entertainment value - anyone who knows a little history wouldn't be fooled by it.
