Superdrive only burns DVD's at 1x !?!?

I thought the Pioneer 103 was a 1x/2x DVD burner? I have 4x DVD-R media, so that's not the problem. I have the 1.90 firmware, so that's not the problem. Is it the burner, or is it Toast 5.2 ? Any ideas ?

If you have a 2x SuperDrive it will burn high speed (4x) media at 1x. This is due to a firmware issue that originally would have caused the superdrive to melt. An update from pioneer prevented this by clocking high speed media to 1x. In order to burn at 2x on a 2x superdrive, get 2x media.
 
The A04/104 was simply the second generation 1x/2x burner.

I'm finding that the burn speed depends more on the media, than the burner !!

It is. Only the Laptop Superdrive is 1x. The A/104 is the next generation, but also 2x DVD-R.

Use 2x media. Preferably good quality. As mentioned, the 4x will often burn at 1x. Even if you've upgraded the firmware.
 
I haven't even burnt 1 DVD yet and I have a superdrive. Dont know why i got it...I guess I got it for the "Just in Case" senario.

But where to find 'true 2x' media ? I have bought 1x/2x DVD-R's and they always burn at 1x. As mentioned, even the 4x burn at 1x. If you know of a particular brand that burns at 2x, please let me know.

Give it a shot, you might end up loving it. DVD's aren't just for videos, but they are awesome backup. So mauch space on so few discs. Amazing.

duh

This makes no sense to me. Does 4x media have something that identifies it to the drive?
 
dunno - tell you this though, in aus Apple DVD-R media is half the price of any other brand. Why get anything else?
