how to take screenshot

I know this is a basic question, but how do you take a screenshot in OS X? In Windows I hit 'print screen' button on keyboard, which sends a screenshot to the 'clipboard', and then I paste the screenshot into blank image file such as a new file in MS Paint to save as jpeg or whatever.

What's the method on Mac?

Go into Applications, Utilities, Grab. In the menu bar at the top click capture and select the type of screenshot you want.

Download snap n drag there's no better screen grab utility. Couple it with the integrated crop tool and it is awesome, it make the normal OS utility look like it was from Windows.

That's exactly what I thought before I downloaded it. I don't need that. But it turns out to be my most used minor app, I couldn't live without it.

for a start it's got cross hairs, and you can choose the jpeg compression after you snap but before you drag it off. But best of all it leaves no crap to clean up. It's magic. You can also do a timed screen which is necessary for screen grabs where the app being grabbed needs to be active.

This took 5 seconds, literally and there's no file on the desktop

By paste do you mean "paste" them into the posts?

You can upload them by going to the manage attachments button, or uploading it somewhere else and using [img] tags.

no, sorry for not being clearer. Like paste them into an image editor. I'm still trying to find a decent free image editor and in windows "Paint" i would always paste images in instead of saving them, im starting to think maybe you can't paste images..

I just ctrl-click and select "open with".

You can then choose the app you want to open the .png with.

Oh, and the png is usually saved to the desktop when you use the default shift>>3 or shift>>4 keystrokes.

This is a really good article with lots of picture examples here:

http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/2006...t-secrets.html

shows multiple examples, charts, and even a run down of third party apps for screenshots.

Another way to capture is opening the Preview application and...

File > Grab > Selection
