How hot is too hot - quick!!!

I've got a mirror door g4 1 gig, and according to Temp Monitor i am at 140F
its never been so high - usually around 130-135, but the air cond. has been broken since last week and its over 80F in my office.

the fans are running all the time full blast

recomend shut down for one hour or so

i know all the old iMacs would automatically shut down if the CPU got too hot. Do the G4's do the same thing? I don't know.

That's waaaay too hot. Check it for obstructions and dust, and see if all the fans are running. Also make sure there is enough breathing room for the air to circulate and be sure it's not sucking in its own exhaust.

Yeah, make sure it isn't some CPU enclousure. My old computer table had a cubby for the CPU and it was always hot in there. I finally decided to remove the back panel and the temp dropped a great deal. I never measured to see how hot it was in there, but 140 seems a bit much.

How do you get to the temp monitor? I looked in utilities, but couldn't find anything.

It's a freeware app called Temperature Monitor. Here's a link:

It works great if you have supported hardware, or I should say hardware that is capable of reporting temperatures.

edit: Oh, and according to the author's FAQ,

the "normal" temperature for current Mac CPUs depends on the particular model, but CPU temperatures between 122 and 158 degrees Fahrenheit (50 to 70 degrees Celsius) can be expected for all up-to-date computers. The PowerPC 7450 processor used on most G4 models is specified to operate at a die-junction temperature between 0 and 105 degrees Celsius (32 to 221 degrees Fahrenheit).
