20" and 24" iMacs Due Mid-to-Late Summer

Appleinsider reports that the long awaited iMac updates will finally be released in mid to late summer -- "sometime between the latter half of July and mid-August".

Appleinsider reiterates that the 20" and 24" iMacs will see radical redesigns "both slimmer and sleeker" than today's offerings.
Quote:
When the project manifests later this summer, it will represent the first major industrial design overhaul to hit the flagship all-in-one consumer Apple desktops in nearly three years.
The 17" iMac is notably absent from the planned makeover and is expected to be discontinued.

Do you seriously want to work by touching the screen of an iMac? Before you answer, take your finger and point it at the Apple menu. Put it back to the keyboard and point it to the file menu. Put it back to the keyboard and then point it at the edit menu. Repeat about 200 times. After that, you will use the other hand to type any response because you feel like your arm is falling off.

Great news! I am seriously thinking about replacing my 17" 1.25 GHz G4 iMac in the near future and I will definitely hold off for a redesign. I will also be waiting until Leopard is shipping with the new iMac, so I won't be buying until October at the earliest, but it's still great to know that new ones will probably be out by this time. Yeah, I know we've heard similar rumors before, but reinforcement is never a bad thing!

I would be disappointed if they dropped the built in speakers. One of the main attraction to the iMac for me was the very small footprint and the absence of wire clutter. I would hate having to make some room on my desk for speakers and have more wires snaking here and there. When I need better quality sound, I stream iTunes to the amp in the leaving room.

Shenanagens!

Oh brother. Didn't they also say new imacs within 2 weeks after WWDC??? Geesh, rumors sites are nothing more than news sites nowadays with a couple of generalized rumors thrown in.

Ok, here:
I predict within the next 12 months apple will release new iMacs! Bet you $10000 I am right!

Mini Surprise ....

I so hope they will drop the 17 inch i mac and replace it with a New design/spec Mac mini that could replace the 17 inch iMac , sthen just bye a 23 inch screen and there's a very nice media server for in the house plus a bedroom tv/vdr/dvd player and recorder .
Aslong as it gets some more power then it has now, lol , like it would be possible not to ;-).

Agreed. The built-in speakers are actually pretty decent. For casual low-volume listening.

The rumors don't say for sure whether the 17" will be dropped or not. My feeling is that the current design with the white casing will stay for the 17" and the higher-end 20" and 24" iMacs will get the rumored make-over.

Or maybe, just maybe, Apple has some cool new touch-screen compact desktop in the works for the edu and low-end consumer market.

I shouldn't think that apple would release a computer without speakers, and certainly not an iMac. One of the big things about even the earliest Apples was that they had a built in speaker, even if it was mono.

I remember when I first played with a Win3.1 era PC, and was just astonished that it didn't have a bult in speaker. I'd been accustomed to such simple pleasures ever since my Dad's Classic II... Great little machine!

The new design will be slick, smart, and of course have an element of how-did-they-do-that to it.

I'm in the market...

HELL NO!!!!!!!!!! That is why i LOVE the iMac, because everything is built in. I think it is so annoying like the older ones to have all these peripherals with cords AAAAHHHH NOOOO!!!!! If you want better speakers you can still buy some to plug in

Give Us An Imac!!!

right now i am utterly disappointed in apple for not upgrading the imac at WWDC. although it wasn't upgraded, it made me realize that it will only get better (hopefully). I really hope the release it sometime soon or I'm going to have to buy something new to occupy my time. As for the mini:

Drop it, make it a mid range tower that can be upgraded for those that want it.

Intel c2d or quad core processor
Better graphics is a must
more RAM capacity
more HD capacity
and lower the price of monitors, and you have a great consumer computer.

Loving and hating apple at the same time.

I don't like the idea of touchscreen personally. Too messy and I do want to sit back a bit when I am working, not having to sit too close to the screen. Touch on iPhone great, makes sense...I'm not so convinced on a computer.

I had originally planned to buy a new iMac this year. I was all ready for January, Leopard, iLife and MacWorld 07. It's been way too long without any updates. I'll probably now just give up and just wait for MacWorld '08 for the same items. My G4 is still running OK for now.

i have strong reason to believe that all this about a touch screen imac could very well be true, in fact i think they might also be attempting to move into the tv display industry, only you get a computer along w/ your television, all in the new imac. only reason why i think this is they're transition into the tv business w/ itunes and then apple tv. apple tv inevitably will displace the mac mini probably by the end of the year, the new mac mini will be apple tv w/ a disc drive, also w/ total access to osx and what not, and possibly even dvr recording. probably not yet w/ dvr, but most certainly that's where they're heading. and the reason why i say this is b/c apple's first announcements at macworld were gaming related, and now they've just openly announced (and yet not announced) that they're now directly competing w/ ps3 and xbox w/ they're higher ended versions of the apple tv. it just will so happen that the higher ended versions of apple tv will have a dvd drive (highest version will definitely have blue ray), probably next version will cost 499 (current 160GB costs 399), and will have more room in the box b/c of the disc drive that they'll be able to add more cards and what not (probably a tv tuner card), and they'll justify all this that the 500 dollar apple tv (compared to the 299 xbox) is a good investment b/c, besides gaming, it does dvr, hd dvd, easy ipod sync, osx, and possibly tons of other ****, like virtual jerk offs and stuff. am i the only one who thinks this? it's 2:49 am, i'm kind of drunk.
