More Google iPhone Apps on the Way

As noted by iLounge, ZDNet reports on Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt's comments in Paris about Google and Apple.

In particular, Schmidt showed off his iPhone and hinted at future applications:
Quote:
"iPhone is a powerful new device and is going to be particularly good for the apps that Google is building. You should expect other announcements from the two companies over time"
AT&T's Glen Lurie made similar comments in an earlier interview that we should expect more Google widgets.

Apple has already announced a new Youtube (owned by Google) application for the iPhone and has indicated that they will be introducing new iPhone applications of over time.

ThinkSecret had mentioned that with the Safari 3.0 beta, Google Apps is now supported by Safari. Of course, Safari 3 is running on the iPhone. put two and two together, and I'd imagine that they are enabling support for the docs and spreadsheet applications.

Man, I think all of these announcements in the last week have been just for me. I used to be on the fence about the iPhone but that fence has now been completely mowed over by a gigantic touch screen bulldozer.

They're a great concept and perfect for small documents, but suck with heavy lifting. How do you embed a spreadsheet document in Google docs and have it update as you update the spreadsheet without having to copy paste.. Auto updating would be huge.

google gearsanyone?

it would bridge the web 2.0/local app divide by allowing local storage and offline usage. i still think we'll see a full SDK withing 12 months, but in the meantime gears (when it's out of beta) should make it less painful for "real" developers.

Google Gears, anyone?

Steve Jobs says that the only way to develop apps for the iPhone is as a web application. Bummer, because this requires an always-on connection to use it.

Google has a product called Google Gears which allows a webapp to be "installed" and run on your local computer even when the computer is disconnected.

I guarantee Google is working on a version of Google Gears for the iPhone. Why doesn't anyone else see this coming?

edit: Heh, dashiel just beat me to it with the post above.

Google seems to be one of the most cool technology companies (aside from Apple) nowadays.

I really hope we see some cool apps for OS X in the future. Like Picasa.

with the almighty google behind it.. it will never fail!

it'd be cool be able to upload to picasa via the phone.. (granted a little redundant and unnecessary..but ehhh )

Now if google and apple could work out an ical syncing program I'd be happy...

Meaning

All meaning in life now revolves around the acquisition of an iPhone. Why would I want to go on without it?

This could be the start of a whole new "religion"

Google's end of the deal

How is Google making money from the iPhone/AppleTV deals? Google has certainly invested some good amount of resources into this. How does it make business sense from their side. Is Apple actually paying Google "per hit" o to license the use of Google's services? Is it more intangible like a "cool" factor gain or to widespread the use of Google beyond de computer?

Is Google+Apple the new Microsoft+IBM?

Much more than that:

1. The more people exposed to YouTube, the more hits they get, and the more ad revenue they make.

2. Unlike IE, Safari's default search is Google, so they get more hits the more people using Safari, and therefore get a lot of money from mac users (and now Windows users who have switched from IE to Safari)

Well how is Google making money from their online apps? They simply are porting some existing apps for iPhone so far. Who knows what's to come though?

It's beneficial for both Google and Apple to work together to unseat Microsoft. Google has everything to gain if iPhone takes off and it only has Google office programs on it. That will take a huge chunk off MS office since they are programs and not online apps.

If online apps takes off, it will only hurt MS.
