First iPhone Reviews Coming Tonight?

The Apple 2.0 Blog claims that the first official iPhone reviews should start trickling out tonight at 6 p.m. PT (9 p.m. ET).

Quote:
From what we've heard the reviewers are going to be generally positive but will not shy away from pointing out the parts of the iPhone experience that were disappointing -- mostly revolving around typing difficulties and sluggish downloads over AT&T's current cellular network.
Apple has provided review iPhones to select journalists ahead of time to allow them time to use and review the units for the iPhone launch. Walt Mossberg received his iPhone on June 11th.

Both Mossberg & Pogue are such Apple fans I can't imaging anything too bad in their reviews.

I would love to have honesty here Of course I guess that the iPhone isn't designed for typing up the great blog or novel but it offers basic functionality then that's good enough.

I guess that a Sidekick Hiptop would be a better on the go blogging tool.

no product is "perfect" so I imagine you'll see some constructive criticism. Everyone I know who has a data plan with their cellphone experience sluggish down/uploads and the like ... it's just part of the territory. Imagine how things will be in even 3-5 years ...

I like Walt Mossberg, but he and Jobs kiss each others asses so much it's hard to hold any credibility for him as a tech journalist. How about giving him a phone when all the other journalists get one? I can't really trust what he writes with that sycophantic relationship.

I know it's an exciting product and all, and that MacRumors likes to report every story as early as possible, but this is getting beyond a joke. It feels like we're getting at least 3-4 iPhone related stories every day. How about cutting that down to 1-2, maybe even a daily summary.

I'm sure members here will surely agree it looks excessive with this many articles daily, and there's still 3 days of it left. Reviews and comments from reviewers currently trying the device have been slowly filtering out over the last couple of weeks, so having to have an entire article to explain there will be some official reviews later is the final straw for me. So far today it has been Service Plans, video of synching and then this. That's to add to the 4 articles yesterday, (two of which for us Europeans surfaced within today's timeframe as they were largely too late for us yesterday).

Someone please wake me up when the iPhone stories start to disappear and we can get back to Macs.

I can guarantee there will be more iPhone stories through the end of this week. It's iPhone week.

Any Hope For 16GB?

Anyone out there think there is any hope left for 16GB? I was hoping it would be part of a "One More Thing" Apple likes to do at the last minute in their typical underpromise/overdeliver philosophy. I am expecting something to be announced thursday or Friday before 6:00PM. With the Data Plans they announced, I might buy even if 8GB is my max. How hard is it to sync with iTunes to replace content? I personally don't need to carry around my whole library.

Does AT&T have anything faster than EGDE that they can roll out within a year's time? I am assuming that maybe Apple did not put 3G in their phone for this reason. It cuts the production cost and the US does not appear to be ready for it anyway. I don't mind waiting a little while for something to load if I cannot get to a WiFi hotspot. Most of what I would be looking up at such times would probably come from "widgets" anyway.

Why did you buy an Apple in the first place? Probably for the same reason as most of the people reading this - they manage to stay ahead of the curve. The personal computer as we know it today is not going to be the same in 3-5 years. The iPhone is a very good "next step"...

...and IMHO they certainly haven't forgotten about the laptop/desktop. What about the current OS doesn't suit your needs...or doesn't blow XP/Vista out of the water? And if you wait just another few months for Leopard, you'll be even farther ahead of the curve.

So stop complaining and enjoy the ride. I'm far from kissing Jobs' a**, but I do respect him as a visionary and trust his instinct. Aside from the Segway, he's got a pretty good track record.

No way. Bring it on.

The iPhone is probably the biggest release of an electronic device in years (maybe since the iPod?). It's going to get a huge amount of coverage in the mainstream press and the geek press. Makes perfect sense to have a ton of coverage here on a mac site.

And it's not like this is going to go on indefinitely, the product ships Friday. If it bugs you that much, just take a break from reading the site until next week. It's not like there's going to be much mac news in that time anyway.

Their regular columns are both -- IIRC -- on Thursdays. In Pogue's case, that would most likely mean his will be online Wednesday night sometime if he's reviewing the iPhone this week.

AAPL is off about $4 so far this week. Looks like the market is a little nervous ahead of Friday.

How am I being ripped off? Maybe if I kept that phone for 5 years or more and still kept paying 5 dollars? In that case, I still make out okay because the insurance will replace it with the latest G-whiz phone that is comparable.

It's only a rip-off only if they resort to legal trickery to not process a claim.
In my experience with phone insurance, they have been honorable.

I doubt s/he is saying a $600 loss would be CATASTROPHIC, but it's still a PITA all the same. If losing a $600 phone would cause you no hardship or heartbreak, then you must have enough money to buy me one, too!

For most people, $60 a year to insure a $600 iPhone is a reasonable safetynet. After all, who hasn't dropped their (insert expensive piece of technological wonderment here) at least once in the last year? And in 2 years, that's still only $120.

Amen to both of you, those stupid naysayers also dont understand that apple has one of the best warranty systems out there. they replace anything and give you a refurbished copy of whatever you own! (although sometimes i swear they are new). Just buy the apple care warranty and you should be perfectly fine...

Yeah, that's about what I was expecting the reviews to say, anyway. It's not a Blackberry killer. I never expected it would be, personally. But I'm sure it's fine for my purposes.

Maybe that's why the stock is drooping; all these institutional investors won't be replacing their Blackberries and they can't understand that for most consumers it isn't such a big deal.

Then probably, the Engadget report on the iPhone keyboard by their reliable source wasn't inaccurate.

I just want to know if you can make and install your own ringtones. I see nothing on either video that says you can or can't. If you can't that's going to be really crappy .

i am very excited to read pogue's response because he likes to write lengthy reviews, and although sometimes pro-apple, he sets it straight and gives plenty criticism

First Somewhat Negative Review For iPhone

Apparently, this review for the iPhone is not looking too good. Check it out.

When you mean not looking too good, you mean as a review right?

That is a horrible review.

It compares the device to a laptop, and doesn't even demonstrate that the reviewer actually used an iPhone.

So I agree that review does not look too good. I know the Post is a worthless paper, but this review does not help them.

Pogue's review

David Pogue's review just hit the front page of nytimes.com:

The link inside (free subscription required) is here.

Headline: "The iPhone Matches Most of Its Hype"

About the typing keypad, he says:

Quote:
Then there’s the small matter of typing. Tapping the skinny little virtual keys on the screen is frustrating, especially at first.

Two things make the job tolerable. First, some very smart software offers to complete words for you, and, when you tap the wrong letter, figures out what word you intended. In both cases, tapping the Space bar accepts its suggestion.

Second, the instructional leaflet encourages you to “trust” the keyboard (or, as a product manager jokingly put it, to “use the Force”). It sounds like new-age baloney, but it works; once you stop stressing about each individual letter and just plow ahead, speed and accuracy pick up considerably.

Even so, text entry is not the iPhone’s strong suit. The BlackBerry won’t be going away anytime soon.
His other criticism is that AT&T's network sucks.

Overall, though, Pogue said he loves the iPhone. The typing and network coverage/speed were the only things he complained about, and those complaints were both near the end of the review.

I agree. Yes, much of the stuff he is saying is true, but it is idiotic to compare a phone screen to the screen on a laptop. He is acting like a phone actually exists that has the same sized screen as a laptop.

He actually admits that he only used the phone for a brief moment. So I don't consider this a review at all. It's more of just an opinion.
