Looks really interesting, like the addressbook integration as well as the magnify feature.

Didn't mention anything about adding words to the dictionary though.

the magnifying glass was mentioned in a story of a restaurant wine director who got to use one because there was a tester eating in his restaurant. and no one believed that he used one but he brought up that magnifying glass feature. now i am starting to believe him

i am also wondering if apple will probably come out with a new video every day until friday. since they had the activation and syncing one yesterday and now this one today

opps missed that bit

"learns the words you type most often including proper names and everything in your addressbook"

Watched it again and it does seems really intelligent and the typing at the end is pretty fast (although I have never used a Blackberry so don't know how quick it is compared to something like that)

I believed him. The magnifying feature was also in a previous patent Apple filed.

edit - blimey! Did you see the way it increases the size of certain keys? Wow. Has this been done before? Thats just genius.

As cool as this is, I hope there is an easy way to disable the word-prediction functionality as I often find myself having to switch to another language for the occasional email and this would get in the way.

My Blackberry also allows me to press the space bar twice which puts a period at the end of a sentence and adds a blank space, then it capitalizes the first letter of the next word. It's very handy and I'll miss it if the iPhone doesn't do this. Who knows, maybe RIM patented that feature.

i think they should put a period on the main keyboard - that’s a very often used punctuation. Having to type 3 buttons to put one in then go back to the letters seems cumbersome

Pretty cool how it anticipates your next key and enlarges it for increased accuracy.

One issue I can see though since you use the space key to accept suggestions, if your word isn't recognized by the dictionary and say is four letters long, but at four letters the keyboard as a suggestion, hitting the space key will accept that suggestion rather than moving on to the next word. If this is the case, that could be a real pain...

On a Blackberry, if you space twice, it automatically adds one. I wonder if the iPhone will do the same...

I totally agree. Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't add it based on feedback during their internal testing phase. Hopefully they'll add it in a software update, because I think it will be a commonly requested feature that the developers could add within an hour.

It is genius, but who would have done it before? There's never been a keyboard like the iPhone's.

You'd just have to tap the deny suggestion a couple of times, then it would learn the word you were using in the future. Not perfect, but not a real pain.

Apple iPhone Keyboard Video

Apple has posted another
tour video
for the Apple iPhone. This time their tour covers their virtual keyboard and predictive input.

The accuracy and ease of use of the virtual keyboard has been a point of concern in the months leading to its launch. Walt Mossberg felt that the on-screen keyboard was a "non-issue" after a week or two of use.

i really enjoyed the two-thumbed typing demo at the end. a lot of typing mistakes, yet the software corrected them all pretty nicely. but i also don't like how the period isn't immediately present. further, the placement of the period to the left might be somewhat unintuitive at first.

That works I guess. Cumbersome with two thumb entry, if it learns could be more of a short-term PITA.

It's landscape, too. Use it all the time.

I can't think of anything on the iPhone that hasn't been done before. Its genius is that many little previously known things are melded together.

Right, lots of errors, but the system corrects it. The keyboard really is an awesome feature of the system. It looks like a lot of hard work has gone into that part of this device. Damn I really want to switch to ATT now, haha.

Wish my (physical) keyboard keys could grow intelligently. That's cool.

All These Videos Are Amazing Selling Vehicles

Each time I look at another one of these instructive videos I start thinking about eating my $175 early out fee at Verizon.

This video is simply amazing, and the magnifying glass is genius work as usual for Apple...I can't wait to get it in Europe, it's a no-contest to any other cellphone out there.

This is the most continuous action I have ever seen on Apple's front page.

Am I the only one who has never really been concerned about the iPhone keyboard?? I've been a cell phone user since 1988 or so and I've found all of the standard keys on my phones virtually unusable for anything other than dialing phone numbers. (I have never taken the plunge with any so-called "smartphones" that have actual keyboard layouts because none of the phones seemed that fantastic to me, but I did have an early Palm/phone combo which got old quick.)

I actually shelled out a few bucks for software solutions (an SMS Dashboard widget and BluePhoneElite) to use on my laptop, just to type SMS messages to my wife because I hate doing it on standard phones.

I for one have never doubted that the iPhone keyboard would be vastly superior to every other mobile device I've used... my fears are limited to the sound quality of calls and maybe the EDGE network...
