AT&T sent out emails to customers today which reveals that they are limiting iPhone sales to "one per person":

With iPhone arriving June 29th at 6 p.m. in AT&T retail stores, the wait is almost over. Use our online store locator to find the closest AT&T store that sells Apple iPhone (limit one per person). We'll show you maps, directions, and everything you need to get your hands on an iPhone as quickly as possible.

There's been no official word if Apple will be similarly limiting their sales, but it may be a safe bet. Appleinsider reports that Apple Stores are preparing by requiring some employees to stay overnight on Thursday night to prepare for Friday's launch.

Finally, we've heard that some above-average size Apple Stores may be getting on the order of 1000 iPhones for Friday's launch, with a ratio of inventory being heavily skewed towards 8GB iPhones over 4GB iPhones at approximately a 4:1 ratio.

MacRumors forum members are meeting up at their respective locations to stand in line.

Nice. Maybe I will watch Die Hard 4 then before going into line... or at the very least sleep in.

i don't understand

are they going to sell out? I've heard reports that there are 3 million of them and reports that they are so rare they are being escorted by armed guards. What's the real availability of them presumed to be for the first month??

good news on the ratio. i can't see too many people buying a 4 gig.

Really? I'm getting a 4 gig. I already have several iPods. I can't really see spending an extra $100 plus tax on an 8 gig when I'll still carry around my regular iPod most of the time. I hope your assumption is correct though, because i'd be PISSED if I had to get one online and wait for it to come in the mail.

Unfortunately that may be a possibility.

Ha. That Apple...

From early reviews, those 4GB (which I am/was) interested in, sound very close to being too small (when you factor in some images, some music, some email*, some contacts, etc.)

* Is email not sitting on a server (.Mac, gmail, etc.) somewhere?!?
Why would that file size register on an iPhone?

Also, anyone heard/know if an iPhone shows up on your Desktop and can act as a portable HD?

And... all landscape rotation has been counter clockwise.
Can you not rotate the phone clockwise and get the same effect?

Thanks for tolerating the slightly OTness. :p

Not for people who want a 4 GB. ;)

...Actually, that is very clever of Apple to get people to spend an extra $100.

Apple is good with the upsell. When I bought my wife's iPod nano last year, I was going to get the 2GB version, but in the shop decided to double the capacity for only $50 (33%) more. From there, it was but a small step to doubling the capacity again for only 25% more.

I'm replacing my current 2G 20 gig, and I want room for a movie or two, at least. Add a couple of playlists and photo libraries and that 4 gigs is gonna be eaten up pretty darn fast.

I'm curious if anything offical (or even more specific) ever came out about the numbers of iphones for launch?

heh

The AT&T store I'm going to is still not listed on their 'Locator'. The store is so new, no one knows it's there! I've already confirmed they will be selling the iPhone too. With the Apple stores only having a thousand, I am a tad concerned how many the AT&T stores will stock. 50? 100? Still glad I got half a day off on Fri!

"Oh, sorry sir. We're all out of the 4GB models. We do have plenty of 8GB models for just $100 more though. *salesperson holds iPhone box just out of reach of customer*"

Sales planning at its finest. :p

You know, on second thought, I think this 4:1 rumor is bogus. I worked at an Apple Store for 8 months, and the cheapest of each iPod line sold the best. People bought shuffles, 2g nanos, and 30g iPods like there was no tomorrow, while the 80g and 8g iPods sold significantly less.

I would imagine the same is going to hold true for the iPhone. While the 4g might not have as much space as people might like to have, the majority of the population can barely justify a $500 phone. Only rich kids and techie geeks are really going to shell out $600 for more capacity.
