MacBook Pro iSights See 1.3 MP Upgrade

ECamm's developer blog, Mac Daddy World, has noticed that new Santa Rosa based MacBook Pros include upgraded iSights sporting a 1.3 mega-pixel camera.

Previous integrated and now-discontinued standalone iSights contained a VGA resolution iSight. While it appears as though Apple's built-in applications such as iChat still force the resolution to VGA quality, any application could theoretically take advantage of the increased resolution as of the Mac OS 10.4.10 update according to the developers.

Good news.

Especially with all the recent hubbub about YouTube videos -- playable on iPhone, playable on Apple TV, encoding to h.264 -- flooding the market with high quality webcams instead of the $15 Wal-Mart trash is a Very Good Thing.

Maybe Leopard or the next iLife will have a 1.3MP video capture app designed especially for making an ass of yourself in high resolution on Youtube.

Kinda neat, but how come they didn't put it on the specs to help sell the new mbp?

Had it for a week and haven't noticed. Shows how little I bother to use the iSight.

I wonder if it's more to do with backdrops in PhotoBooth. Somebody I talk to online (who is also a member of these forums) has downloaded and uses Leopard, and it looks like either Backdrops are VERY unfinished or iSights are not outputting a consistent enough image for it to work. Certain parts of the background just seem to re-appear, and I could understand why when you look at the noise produced by the iSight. I guess this new higher resolution one is less 'noisy'.

Hopefully that means we'll get the standalone version of the iSight back again.

I thought the scoop was that the transition to H.264 was going to allow this.

But if not oxymoron, still irony, at the least. Higher resolution copies of more and more crap.

Maybe apple will *finally* release a new stand alone iSight then. Keep the price point but make it 2mp, that would rock.

Actually, YouTube is using H.264 encoding now. The new videos look much better than the old flash versions. And I suspect that we will soon see true HD videos posted to YouTube.

What, Apple makes notebooks!?

Hello, Apple makes laptops??? I just thought they made phones

Gee a 1.3mp video conference camera on a kickbutt computer (that's feature for feature the BEST VALUE in notebooks, just try and find a fast PC notebook with gigabit and great graphics, not even counting good design.)

What? MacBook Pros & iBook sales are at all time record levels?

And nobody is paying any attention to this?

My buddy is really looking forward to his new MacBook Pro, he's replacing a ThinkPad with a MacBook Pro. Oh, yeah, that's another amazing trend, the number of PC users coming over to the Mac by way of new MacBook Pros and iBooks.

Forget the phone, this is the real Apple story!

They do make phones now. They don't make iBooks anymore.

Haha, I was thinking the same thing - MacRumors has turned into iPhoneRumors this past week! For those of us not in the States it's a bit of overkill, but good for the Americans at least who can actually buy one.

As for this upgrade, this is good news. I wonder if this has anything to do with Apple's partnership of sorts with YouTube... By offering a higher res image and video capture device it would be a lot easier to post to YouTube if desired. Regardless, nice to see the upgrade!

I would love to see an option in iChat which let you choose resolution according to your internet speed. I usually use university optic fiber and can afford ichat at max resolution

aspect ratio

I wonder if this is still a 4:3 image, or a 16:9 (16:10) to match the screen ratio?
