Yes. They are. Why are you so surprised? Nothing new about legacy software not supporting new features. Lots of stuff out here that I can't run on my Windows 2000 PC.

Hmmm, they have much better support of Windows software than Mac. I could in principle still use a 4 year-old copy of windows XP with the iPhone but can not use a two year old Apple's own OS X. Tell me again why this is good?

Just got off the phone with Apple...there's nothing else to do but buy the upgrade. Absurd.

Panther was released 4 years ago, 2003. Tiger is over two years old, released May 2005.

Me to, I had to pass on the the iphone today for that same reason. I wont pay 129$ for 10.4.10 when 10.5 leopard will be out in just a few months. As much as I love Apple, I feel I should be abble to at least skip every other OS X version I.E. 10.3 to 10.5

I think apples theory is if your going to drop 500 plus tax on a iPhone more than likely you have the most current os.

You're lucky. My iTunes doesn't even recognize the iPhone (yes, it's 7.3), even though iPhoto does. I hope upgrading to 10.4.10 will fix it, but I won't be able to find out until tomorrow.

most people have read the system requirements and know what is needed.

have you really just bought the phone from the hype without reading up on it?

it's well documented.

First of all, this has been known already for a long time so if you had bothered to check you would already have known. Second, why would Apple purposefully support the last revision of their operating system when the iPhone requirement could possibly motivate some people to upgrade to Tiger. Third, why should Apple need to provide legacy support for a five year old product. I'm sorry, but I really don't see how you could have thought that Apple would not require 10.4.x.

Question =(

try to come by the Apple Store, Mac Specialists can use one of the computers to set up an account, but sync is totally a loss. Unfort. that's somthing apple didnt really think about.

but hey, i think its a great time to upgrade to Tiger. only $130. comparing for $500 Vista.

well sorrrrrry up to date apple man. sorry I have an OS product 2 years old that doesn't work with my iphone.

Listen, I'm a huge fan of Apple, but if you are telling me I'm in the wrong for simply buying a phone and not being able to activate it at the convenience of my home (the whole point was to make it easier and more convenient) then I don't know what to say. I'm purely stating I buy a phone, I should be able to use it within the day with or without Tiger.

Anyway...now that I have 10.4.1 I got the AT&T wait email for activation. This is truly ridiculous...

Haven't owned many cell phones then, have you? Every single one requires activation of some sort. This one, you can do at home rather than standing at the counter in a store. Terrible.

He's simply saying you should have checked and that makes sense.
It's not really two years old though, is it? Its first version was released in 2003. Tiger is two years old, though.

Upgrading to 10.4.10 was necessary, but not sufficient. I had to RE-install iTunes 7.3 before it would finally see my iPhone. It's activating now; I'm keeping my (virtual) fingers crossed.

Well, it worked. I can't seem to make outgoing calls, but everything else seems okay.

iPhone Requirements

When I purchased my iPhones at the AT&T store yesterday, they ran down a checklist which included the requirement of a PC or Mac running the needed OS versions. I'm surprised this wasn't made clear when you purchased your iPhone. Even though I'm running 10.4.10, it does me no good since 24 hours after initiating activation, AT&T still hasn't completed it.
