I'm going to be starting grad school in computer science soon and was considering the 17" high res santa rosa mbp. Naturally when programming you want all the screen real estate you can get, and I will need a laptop since I will probably be moving between my office, apartment, and labs frequently.

However, is programming on the 17" high res machine comfortable? Can you look at text all day without straining your eyes?

Any firsthand experience would be appreciated.

It depends on you. Not what someone else tells you.

There have been so many debates that you can do is visit a store and look at the 15 and 17" models. I use the 17" model pre-SR and have absolutely no problems with reading the text.

As a designer, the 17" gives plenty of workspace -- I'm assuming the same would go for programming.
As far as the reading, I don't have a high resolution screen, but reading on my 17 all day gives me no problems.
