they should have a disclaimer.

this is all based of an analyst opinion. none of these numbers are official.
this article is based off of a reuters report based off a L.A. Times report based of an analyst.

lets wait until Apple releases a press statement.

I agree half a million would be astronomical.

For comparison purposes I wonder how many Zunes were sold in the first weekend?

The iPhone needs to be sold in more retail outlets, aside from Apple and At&t.

I had been guessing around the half million mark. So when will we know for sure? Apple will probably have an announcement a week later, no?

500,000 phones? Not bad at all, if it is true. That would mean the iPhone has already generated about a billion dollars in cash flow over the next two years (assuming that all contracts complete the 2-year requirement).

500,000 iPhones sold * ($550 (iPhone Average) + ($60 per month * 24 months)) = $995 million.

Not too shabby Apple. AT&T owes you sexual favors for this.

Hickman

How many of them were contributed to the Dallas woman who got owned paying for a spot in the front of the line to buy the entire stock, only to get one?

Pretty cool! Especially when you think this was only the US. Imagine if Apple had somehow managed a release in other parts of the world.

Can't wait for this thing to come to the UK!

One would assume so. No point on sitting on real good news, if there are units left to be sold, hype up the sales numbers to try to get even more people interested in buying. Not to mention if there are more left to be sold, to let people who where avoiding the long lines know they can just walk into an Apple store and get one.

It probably will be just like an iPod, after the Apple and AT&T stores get ALL of the initial rush sales

Half a million phones seems like a lot, but with news of almost all AT&T stores being out of stock as well as some Apple store, I'de almost believe it...

A half-million is what I hoped for and expected. I'm rather irritated that, due to circumstances, I had to order mine off Apple's website... but oh well, a little delayed gratification should do me good.

Not before the quarterly results conference call in mid-July, I guess.

Someone should interview and show him a video of him saying the quote in your signature then show him the stats on how many have sold and see what he says then. He'd probably deny the stats. --which, I didn't even know was possible.

Trying to estimate how many iPhones were sold over the weekend is like the "guess how many jellybeans are in the candy jar" contest. We'll see when Apple has their conference call at the end of the month.

The big thing for AT&T is that about half of those 500,000 people were new subscribers, either switching from other carriers or with brand-new accounts.

A quarter-million additional users? That's HUGE.

How many of those people will re-up in two years when AT&T isn't the only company you can get an iPhone from.
