600,000 iPhone Activations with AT&T?
![]() Newswireless.net claims that AT&T has activated 600,000 iPhones as of Monday night. As a result, they believe that Apple will hit one million iPhone sales by Wednesday/Thursday. Newswireless is the same publication that believed that the European iPhone deal was to be announced on Monday. Now, they say that the European launch announcement will likely coincide with Apple's one million iPhone sales mark. |

Sounds like yet more 'educated' guess work, just not sure where people are getting their education. I'm sure Apple and AT&T will waste no time in crowing about the actual sales/activation figures. Until then we'll just have to wait and see - or keep hopelessly speculating.

yeah, right. I reckon it will take a couple of weeks to hit a million sales. Anyway, wouldn't it be more logical to announce the Euro iphone at Paris expo in early September?
next announcement iphone wise will be feature enhancements to the current model auto-updated through itunes. That I could believe coinciding with the millionth sale. New imacs in August.

I believe AT&T is much more forthcoming with information than Apple. If AT&T says 600,000 activations happened, then that is definite. If AT&T estimates 1 million activations before next weekend, then believe it. The only thing to resolve is an original source on the claim.
In any case we DO know AT&T and Apple prepared for this day for months and the activation servers were STILL swamped. Rocketman AT&T wifi http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pi...rticleid=24031 AT&T press releases http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=1574

Don't forget it's becoming hard to buy an iPhone. Until the next round of stock comes in, activations are bound to slow down.
Can't complain about these sales figures. Damn. |

600,000 sounds pretty impressive, but I too would guess that figure would be slowing down, with supplies running lower, and I wouldn't guess the stores would even be open for purchasing one today.
As a side note, what's up with the change in how page 2 stories look in the browser. It's not a good change. Things are all off to the left and have no borders. Then when you get to the forum version of the post, it all looks normal again. |

600,000 in activations. Noo one has bothered to mention that this 600,000 number does not include any of the online sales so far. We are probably a lot closer to 1 million now than people think. Plus the few thousand unactivated phones on fleabay.

I am expecting Apple will have a press release next week about how many phones were sold; they are still selling the initial batch, and this week is kind of an "off" business week with July 4 smack in the middle.

*whistles* 600,000. That's pretty impressive. More than I would have thought. I still think Steve will be hard pressed to make his 10 million number.
Just thought about it. 600,000 x $60 per month = $36,000,000 per month x 12 = $432,000,000 over 12 months. Maybe its time to buy some AT&T stock Last edited by nydoofus : Jul 4, 2007 at 11:44 AM. |

10 million is the amount they expect to sell in 2008.

Yeah, I knew that :P. What I meant to say is that the activation rate will slow as the early adopters will have gotten theirs soon. I still don't think he'll make his 10 million number, but I'm sure I'll end up eating my words later.

Don't forget about the extra 36 bucks that they make for each activation fee as well.

I would think that Apple and AT&T will have to work together carefully to get their initial sales and activation numbers in sync. Might not look very good if Apple announces 1 million iPhones sold and AT&T announce 850,000 activations. The media would jump all over that, claiming activation problems, eBay abuse, and people hacking systems for open phones.

As I understood it, 10 million is the amount they expect to sell by the end of 2008 -- in other words, 10 million in 18 months or so. Given than they look like they will close in on a million fairly shortly, and there is still the holiday season ahead, sales in 2007 are pretty significant toward meeting that goal.

I doubt (guarantee) we will (not) see a press release until 1,000,000 are sold.

I think many of the Apple haters expect sales to just drop off after 1 million sales
I expect them to continue dominating for another few years. Maybe not at once....maybe a few softeware updates will appeal to more business men and more sales will increase. I use mine for work and enjoy it very much.

Apple still has the REST OF THE WORLD to sell to.
I wonder when Ballmer will stop laughing...

Thats just for the minimal service. I would bet the average is more likely 900 min/month = 600k x $80 = $48 million (per month) x 12 = $576 million Plus apple selling 95% of the iPhones at the 8GB level: 600k x $600 = $360 million Just for the opening phase of sales, stocks in both companies will rise like baked bread. |

It was 10 million by the end of 2008, and if 1 million are sold already (or it is close to that figure) they are on the way. Don't forget that is just sales for 2 weeks in North America.
There is Europe and Asia, which will probably avidly snatch up a million in each region like NA did. 3 million by the end of 2007 is not impossible by any stretch of imagination. There might be 2,000,000 easily sold in NA by the end of the year. Keep in mind that people will be influenced by the iPhone by seeing friends showing them off, using them, etc. If you are a computer user with a cel phone, and you are stuck with some clunky little cheese toy while you see the next guy watching movies, browsing the internet, etc, you will lust for their iPhone.
