Proud to be part of the Mac community?

Hi everyone, first post - here goes...

Sitting in Subway today (Subway rules!) and behind me was a table of geeky looking lads. They where talking about technology in general, then one of them mentioned the iPhone. He said somthing along the lines of "yeah, its got this finger print reader, so only you can unlock it – by sliding your finger across it” Urrr Ok then? He then went on to say "but the Nokia...something... is way better because it has the internet"

Ooooh... if only they knew. But wait it gets better...

The conversation then moved onto viruses and problems with PC’s, then how wonderful Vista was. I hate ignorant windows users, they had obviously never heard of Apple except for iPod and now iPhone. I wanted to go up to them and get my MBP out of my bag and show them a real computer, This is not another go at windows users, just - how proud are you to be a Mac user - don't you feel special?

So, I began to think about how proud and privileged I am to be part of the Mac community.

I think its nice to be a in that small group who have realized what a Mac is, that you do not have to put up with viruses etc. Its great to see the popularity of the Mac expanding and hopefully it will continue to take over, but for now... I'm proud to be part of that ‘special group’.

Anyway, rant over, look forward to contributing on Macrumors forums.

I am glad that I am a Mac user and will never be a PC user. A Mac is all a person needs because a person could run Mac OS X, Windows XP or Vista and Linux on a Mac if they choose to. Mac OS X doesn't get viruses and doesn't have a registry in its core like Windows. All I ever need is Mac OS X for the stuff I do. But for the future, I can't wait to see OS XI and what revolutionary changes it will bring.

I've been using the Macintosh since 1995, and it's become a major part of my life. I've also been very active during the years in the Mac community both in Norway and on the web. The main reason of why I use a Macintosh is the Mac community, and not the hardware nor the OS. But...the Mac community have changed. During the last years I've been watching the Macintosh become more and more an design icon, and this have made the Mac community more and more elitist and arrogant. I believe this is the result of a rush of new users that's been switching to the Macintosh the last years, and I think they've never gone through the times when Mac users were much more seen as "stupid" by both Windows and Linux users.

I know this won't be popular with a lot of the members in the Mac community, but it's my opinion. I truly hope the Mac community will change back to the "good old days" when we were just thinking different instead of being trendy as we are today.

I'm seeing two things:

1. The city I live in right outside of Chicago is filled with artists and creative types. I used to be the few Mac users sitting at the coffee shop. Now, it's mostly Macs (especially after the switch to Intel). Now, at least around home, I'm just "another Mac user.".

2. As far as business and Windows, I find people are becoming more entrenched into investing and thus defending their Windows purchases, hence saying stuff about Apple which simply is not at all true. To each his/her own...

Am I proud? More proud that I've been a supporter of Apple since the Apple II...

I suppose so. Back at college there was so many problems with Windows laptops. Getting one to work with a projector wasn't as easy as plugging the VGA cable in, oooh no. You had to call me up to switch output mode on the machine.

Then the Mac owners were smug.

By the end of university virtually everyone on my course had a Mac. And it felt good.

I think generally Mac users tend to be, for obvious reasons.

gkarris - you say that where you live its mostly Macs - sounds brilliant, would love to live there. I live in the UK and I don't seem to see so many around. Perhaps thats why I feel so privlaged to be part of the Mac community.

Having been using a Mac since 1994 (Think it was 70mhz - awsome machine, unfortunately I can't claim to using an Apple II though as i'm only 17) there is a sence of "the good old days", having seen the machines and OS develop, while Windows users do what windows users do.

Being a Graphic designer, the Mac is my tool and an awsome one too. I'm smug/proud whatever.

I've been a lifelong Mac user, so yeah I have of bit of that pride ingrained in me. I grew up with Macs, my grandma' got games for me that I could play on her SE/30, my parents got a Macintosh LC a little while later, and got some games that I could play. I was the bomb at Kid Pix!

When I got to the point where I needed a computer for school, my mom got us a Performa running OS 8.

While I did cross to the dark side in the Mac OS 9 years, I saw the light when OS X Panther came out, and my parents got me an eMac to replace my fried Windows XP machine. Since then I've had a PowerBook G4 and a MacBook Pro, and I'll never switch to Windows again.
