iPhone Promotion at BestBuy (Canada)

BestBuy.ca is promoting an early signup for information for the Canadian version of the iPhone.

why best buy?

uhhh, This is kinda interesting. I would assume that apple would have the same arrangement here in Canada as the USA, where as the iphone is only sold at an apple store, or at a rogers store (assuming since they will be the ones getting it)

So then Best Buy thinks its going to be able to sell it? or maybe it is?

I dont see anything on their site saying they sell rogers stuff?

Good to see something though in regards to it coming to Canada. The rest of the world is missing out

No big deal. Best Buy is just farming e-mail addresses for their newsletter updates.

Best Buy does sell Fido phones if I remember correctly, so that's the connection there I guess. I'm also sure a date will be released at the same time from all sources, there's no reason for Best Buy would be the only company to let us know first.

Sounds right, still good to know for people who live in Canada, that people haven't forgotten the iPhone.

Best Buy in the US doesn't have iPhone, so thats something to think about.

Rogers sells through many chains like "The Source" (Circuit City), but with only 4 Apple Stores in Canada, and not so many true Rogers stores, Apple will definitely need an associated channel to sell the iPhones.

Why best buy

All best buy's have cell phone service counters in them where they can move the product and the cell plans. We don't have too many apple stores. Like one or 2 in toronto i think.

which means ugh rogers... crappiest cell coverage anywhere

Very good point. Makes Best Buy seem a very feasible reseller for Canada.

Agreed. Atleas there in Montreal we have an Apple store that we can go to to play with the iPhone once it comes out.

Rogers does not sell any cell phones or cell phone plans at Bestbuy.
Maybe Apple is planning to use Fido (which is sold at Bestbuy) for the iPhone .

I feel like I'm in the dark ages with regards to technology here in Canuck land...

I am not optimistic about the iPhone in Canada at all either.....hell we may never get it....

Rogers...i don't know, their data plans are not even feasible...I can't believe the amount of $$ they ask for so that current people/users can get a stupid e-mail or AIM message on their phone, let alone all the media and bandwidth that will be needed to run an iPhone on Roger's network...

I could see Rogers charging around $150 a month to START for an iPhone data plan....could you imagine??

not optimistic at all.......sorry.

The problem is more general. Cell phone technology and service development and availability here in Canada are at least a generation behind what's offered south of the border. The extreme cost of starting a carrier business combined with a smaller population and hence less demand means that it's very difficult for anyone new to break in to the market.

I don't have a cell phone. One reason for that is that I don't want to be gouged. Dollar for dollar, Canadians pay two to three times the cost for basic cellular services when compared to rates in the US.

They carry MBs, MBPs, Minis and iMacs, as well as software and accessories. Interestingly, their iMacs are on sale right now.

This is crap. They may know nothing and are just using this to drive people to their site and as free promotion of their stores by signing people up for the newsletter, or they may know something.

I'm skeptical, and hoping we get a CDMA version of the iPhone here in Canada so we don't have to deal with Rogers' RIDICULOUS data rates. Even if it does come to Rogers I will get it, but I'd prefer not to.

As for Rogers... they're playing hardball and rightfully so. As much as I love Apple and hate Rogers, they are the only GSM provider, and they can hold out for some of their own terms if they so choose. All I know is, if I can get my iPhone unlocked (yea I already got one on iDay I'm addicted), then I'll be happy and won't have to wait for Rogers and Apple to come to an agreement (whch may lead to the iPhone not coming to Canada for a very long time).

Yep, Best Buy bought out Future Shop (Canadian owned until then) a few years back when they began making their move into Canada. I also thought that Best Buy would begin to phase out Future Shop about now, since they began to build Best Buy within a kilometer distance of Future Shops

I've even seen a couple Best Buys and Future Shops in the same area built at the same time. I guess they're trying to flood the market.

From the look of things, I'd say BestBuy is trying to drum up emails for their lists. There has been no official confirmation from Rogers, Telus, or Bell about the iPhone.

Personally, I'll stick to London Drugs and A&B Sound out here on the Left Coast. iPhone or no iPhone.

Why? I buy a lot of electronics and, by far, Best Buy/Future Shop is the better company. Over A&B Sound by a mile. London Drugs is ok.
