A few days ago my friend's imac stopped booting into OSX and would go straight into OS9. It couldn't boot into OSX no matter what I did. I thought that it would be fine after we reinstalled OSX and ran Disc Utility from the Tiger install disc, but it can't even detect the hard drive in the Installer and Disc Utility shows an error message any time we attempt to repair the dis (but it can tell it's there). I don't think he's abused or tampered with the system in any way. I think the drive might just be broken, but I was wondering if there was any way to retrieve the information off of the drive. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

FYI: It's a 17" 800Mhz iMac G4. With (I Hope) 10.4 and 9.2 installed.

If you have another mac with firewire, try putting the iMac into Target disk mode, if a drive shows up on the other mac, see if you can browse the files, if not then some repair untility is needed. Good Luck.
