VLC video player stutters when playing DIVX (avi) or DVDs over my network. My Windows laptop has not issues playing these files over my network. Any ideas what may be causing this? If I copy the files to my mac, they run fine. Anyone recommend a better player than VLC ?

I've seen the same, and There are actually instructions on how to turn VLC into a server to play media streaming from one computer to another. I've done it that way without the hiccups....
What I do currently, is Installed Perian Codec Pack...mapped a network drive with my movies on it, created an alias to that drive, and placed it in the Movies folder under my Home directory on the mac that I connect to the TV, and then use Front row. Very few hiccups this way. Does take a bit to get through the menus, but everything has it's price.

Use VLC's Streaming Wizard. Under the File menu. That makes short work out of network playback... plus, more than one computer can join in and watch!
Maybe I didnt explain what im doing clearly. I am simply playing a file from a network share folder on my WinXP machine. I dont need to stream anything. To use that function, VLC must be running on the host machine.
Since I am simply playing a file over a network share, it shouldnt stutter like this. I actually tried using Quicktime to play some video files and it plays just fine. Im not crazy about Quicktime, and I like VLC better (use it on Windows).
I found this site, looks like its a common issue on Mac. I tried the tip on increasing the caching value, and it seemed to do the job.
