Yesterday in the OKC craigslist there was a mbp for sale http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/sys/373174322.html

I emailed the guy and got this reply:

My name is Beck Carl* and I live in Plano, Texas .The item is new with 12 months warranty(with all standard accessories ) . It is an unwanted gift, bought for my birthday and I want to sell it asap!
Here is how I want to go about delivery and payment for the product which will be through Chronopost and will also give you the chance to inspect the product before I receive the payment for it.
I will explain to you step by step how this will work.
A. First you have to send me your shipping information (your name and address).
1. After I have received your shipping info, I'll go to a Chronopost Location and I will leave the
product onto your name and address as the intended receiver.
2. Chronopost will check it to see that the unit was placed with all the papers and to see that is legal.
B. You will receive a notification from Chronopost as a confirmation that the product is in their custody and also, that the product has been tested.
1.Chronopost will send you an invoice, and if everything is in order, they will deliver the product to your door step.
2. After you will receive the product and you will be completely satisfied with it, you will instruct Chronopost to release the payment information to me, so I can collect my money.
C. If by any reason, you will not be satisfied with the product, you will return the product to Chronopost with no expenses.
I will pay for the shipping and you for fee for the transferred amount .
Let me know if we can do this!*

By googling "Beck Carl" I found a forum post where some people said they were scammed, but no details. My question is How does the scam work? Does he send an empty box, or what? Do you know anything more about this?

They don't send anything. You think you're dealing with Chronopost, when you've actually given your money to the scammers.

FYI, Chronopost is a French delivery company...AFAIK, they don't even offer domestic (US) delivery. TNT used to be the European carrier scammers spoofed, but they've now moved on to Chronopost as people have caught on to the TNT scam.

Boy are you guys PARANOID! Give the guy a chance. I trust him completely. I gave him both credit card numbers just in case there's any problem. He wanted my social security number (to help track the package, he said) so I gave him that too. He's gonna ship Overnight, so he says I'll get my new MBP tomorrow on SUNDAY! I can't wait!;)

Yes, I'm kidding.

If you actually transferred (sent) money you have been totally scammed. There is a 100% chance that you have lost your money and you absolutely will not receive the item that you attempted to purchase.

Never send money to someone who advertises on Craigslist. Only deal with local people.

Craigslist Dell XPS Maxed out Laptop Scam TNT UK

Hi all,

Just want to alert everyone who comes across this scam. I live in Tampa, FL and just a couple of days ago found what I thought was an incredible deal for a Dell XPS laptop from someone on Tampa craigslist. Roughly $3,500 fully tricked out laptop advertised for $800. Sounded too good to be true, but I was intrigued. So exchanged a few emails, became suspicious, did some googling and ended up here in this forum. Defff sounded too good to be true and sure enough it is. It matches what others have posted here to the tee. Here is the first email I got from "her", ""Hazel Donald" hadonald@live.com":

"Hi,
The laptop it's just like new. It comes with receipt and warranty.
There is a thing though, the laptop and I are in UK. Anyway, if you are interested in buying this I found a really good shipper who I'm willing to pay and it will also help us to by pass the fraud issue.
Waiting for your reply" --- "she" also attached 7 digital pics of the laptop with this 1st email

"by pass the fraud issue" can't believe "she" had the nerve to go there LMFAO

2nd email I got from "her":

"To avoid any problems this is the service I want to use:
http://2days-tnt.com/tnt.express.london.depot.overseas.transactions/
I'm willing to pay for the shipping and third party fee and you will have to pay for the money transfer fee.
Let me know
This is my phone number 703 184 8921"

This all happened from about October 5th 2008 to October 10th 2008. So the scam is alive and well and if you see it or any similiar derivative of it, run like the wind before you get scammed hardcore. I really wonder how many people out there have fallen for this? So sad. I posted "her" supposed phone number, which I haven't tried calling yet, and "her" email address so if anyone wants to try finding and prosecuting this lowlife dirty rotten scammer they can. I'm also really curious about who owns and operates "2days-tnt.com" I hope by me posting this it helps someone out there avoid getting scammed.

Have a good one! ;-)

In the Redwoods, California
Scams have gotten WAY more sophisticate and elaborate than they used to be.

Anytime I'm ever asked for unsolicited personal information I become suspicious. I don't even confirm to the telemarketers my name or address any more especially on the ones with no caller ID. Not that these can't be faked as well.

I'm trying to teach my kids how easy it is personal information is collected these days. It's no wonder identity theft is out the window, let alone the different scams.

I couldn't agree more. Only deal with local people or reputable outlets when buying something such as a computer. Jdwingnut is quite right to have raised the issue of protection of personal information with his or her children; it is absolutely vital, for, in a world where we all sit at a table and tap at a keyboard, it is deceptively easy to feel completely safe while the boundaries between the personal/private space and the public space are eroded, or redefined.
Cheers

total scam, i see this all the time on craigslist. also be weary to if anyone does meet someone from craigslist... bring someone with you, meet in a public place during daylight hours, choose a good neighborhood and a location that should be busy with people around. i have heard in the past that someone went to meet to SELL their computer to someone and the buyer had an additional person with them and they stole the laptop. cover yourself. if you're buying, bring a counterfeit pen to check the cash.

Mac Pro Quad Core - Scam?

Yes, once again on Craigslist, but first noticed in Connecticut and coincidentally, the same posting on the Boston Craigslist yesterday 10/15/08.

Mom was right !
If anything is too good to be true... it is.

Too bad, this baby sounded totally tricked out (so to speak)

You would think a scam as old as this one would at least try to appear different as to try to fool people. Thanks to this forum I too also found this "too good to be true" ordeal was the same scam that has been around for a few years. The ad was posted on Craigslist in Kansas city for a new 17" Macbook Pro for $800.

Here is my first email back from whomever
