As noted by iPhoneAlley, Gamasutra has notes from John Carmack about the iPhone.

Specifically, Carmack stated that he specifically argued with Steve Jobs that the iPhone should be an open development platform. Regardless, "Carmack thinks the iPhone is "neat," and has assigned some of his people to look into developing for it."

I think John Carmack should open source his guidance and control software on his lunar lander for us rocket geeks. I do not see him in a hurry to do so. If he will do so on a limited basis to ME, I have something he needs really badly. H2O2.

As for Steve opening the iPhone, I do see it as the ultimate resource for malicious users as well as well intentioned businesses and "hackers".

MS could work with Apple to make a "closed" app that reads and writes all those MS file formats if they wanted to.
