Its dead, Jim... the keyboard

Watched a buddy spill coffee on the edge of his closed G3 Powerbook today. Looked like a superficial spill but, sure enough, the keyboard is now completely unresponsive. Mouse works, but not keyboard. The machine is running, but has since gone to sleep. Don't know how to wake the thing. I am a PC person and am basically Mac illiterate. Any suggestions for the guy other than "take it to the shop"?

Plug in a USB keyboard, like an Apple Pro Keyboard, and see if the machine is working ok or if there are any other problems. Then you can at least shut it down so you can take it to your local Apple Store.

shut it down by holding the power button for 10 secs. Then turn it on. Then be grateful it does even that. Spillage is very destructive.

open it up, and turn it upside down over a towel overnight... it's what you should always do for a spill, but it has to be done before the liquid dries. Coffee ieaves a particularly nasty residue inside computer equipment, you might be SOL.

http://www.macresq.com/ offers an inexpensive $99 for service, and probably about $99 for the replacement keyboard through their PowerbookResQ program.

Next time, don't use liquids near a computer.
