AppleWorks is no more!

Macworld Uk reports that Apple has pulled Appleworks for good.

Qoute: Apple told resellers of the demise of AppleWorks last week, announcing that the software had reached "End of Life" status. It will no longer be sold. The AppleWorks website now directs users to the iWork section of Apple's website.

RIP

Apple discontinues AppleWorks

Category: Apple Software
Link: Apple discontinues AppleWorks
Description:: Without grand publicity, Apple has decided to stop all development on AppleWorks, its formerly iconic productivity suite. The information was quietly passed on to resellers last week, who were told that the software had reached an "End of Life" stage.

I wish iWork was called AppleWorks, actually. It has a long history.

Besides, we've been trained that "i" translates to "home" and "power" (or, now,
"pro" or anything non-"i") equals "work". So, "iWork" translates to "HomeWork" and no one likes homework, but a lot of people like Apples.

iLife makes perfect sense.

Twenty three years as a long run. I remember sitting down to an Apple IIe and playing with the word processor because the salesperson thought that it would convince me that the machine was a good choice. Of course, there wasn't a lot of on screen information before GUI systems so I was lost.

AppleWorks/ClarisWorks has served me well. I just need to convert all those documents now.

RIP. But really, it's kind of amusing to hear about Apple "discontinuing development" of AppleWorks. When was the last time it was updated, 2001?

It was just a guess without checking, but I believe the last update of any significance came right after the release of OSX 10.0 -- the carbonized version of AppleWorks. No new features, just the ability to run it without Classic. Even calling that "continued development" is being generous! Yes, Apple continued to sell it, but again, this was not development, which effectively ceased at least six years ago.

Can't say this comes as a surprise. Now that iWork has been around for a couple years, has started to mature and especially now that Numbers has been added to the suite, this is a logical move for Apple. AppleWorks has a great past (I remember using it almost 20 years ago myself!) but iWork is the future.

I used it when I first got my Mac, but now I use Omnigraffle, iWork and Office. I really enjoy using the mac to do my work. Now, I just wish someone [Apple] would donate me a MBP or a 20" monitor.

I used it for a little while, but in the advent of OS X there were other suitable 3rd party applications that gradually took it's place. However, I now use Nisus Writer Express as my main word processor. If I need to get more complicated with layout I use indesign, or my old classic QuarkXPress 4.04.

We still don't have a good paint program like AppleWorks had. I think MSPaint's popularity has proven that a simple paint client could be a good addition OS X's software suite.

Thank God that they've discontinued that travesty. It was wonderful in the OS 9 days, I feel, but now it was just ridiculous. iWork is superb for my purposes.

Funny, they're still selling it at Best Buy in the brand new Apple section! I almost bought a copy thinking it was a current product!

I bought it in 2001 right before starting college...I had no idea there was an update after that. The carbonized version was just good enough to get me through college, but some of my professors complained that AppleWorks double-spacing was toooo much spacing. <Sigh>

That's the first thing that I thought of when I read this. Applework's paint was great for simple graphics. I suppose Apple expects us to use Photoshop.

What would be really sweet is if Apple added some basic paint functionality to Preview, even though that would make it more than just a "preview" app. Apple Canvas?
