Wireless Gaming - Old Router va. Old Laptop vs. XBOX 360 Wireless Accessory

I have a 4 y.d. wireless router hooked up to my Intel iMac. Recently, I stopped using an older laptop to connect to XBOX Live and purchased the XBOX 360 wireless adapter.

With the laptop setup, I could stream music from the computer to the 360, and had no problems - just slower than desired connection. With the XBOX adapter, now there is a constant stop and start of music, and my connection to XBOX Live seems to come and go.

Anyone ever use this adapter? Was I better off with the laptop? Or am I just really in need of a newer router? If the latter is the case, any recommendations?
