The backlight of my iPhone seems to be on all the time unless i "lock" it with the button on the top. I think it needlessly consumes battery power this way.

Is there a way for it to turn off the backlighting automatically after a few minutes of inactivity without locking it?

Also, when the iPhone is docked, the screen is on and bright all the time. Is this healthy for the screen?

Have you checked in SETTINGS -> GENERAL -> AUTO-LOCK?

It sounds like that might be turned off on your phone for some reason.

If that is turned on to a set time, then your screen should power down after that time.

It will be locked then though, automatically.

You said you wanted the screen off without locking it though, so this might not be a good answer to your question.

I don't know of any way to power the screen down automatically without locking the phone.
