OK - 9to5mac speculates the new video iPod will have a resolution of 480x320 pixels. Same as iPhone.

SO - in encoding my first DVD rip via Handbrake - I noticed the "iPhone" setting seemed to use a 480x352 resolution. If so, do you lose some of the picture? If you've checked "preserve aspect ratio," you get something like 432x320.

Is this because I'm using a 4:3/non-widescreen source material?

Does the "iPhone" setting always do 480x352, and if so how does it look?

What ratio looks best to use?

Seeing as I'll hopefully be encoding lots of stuff - and it takes a looong time - it would be great to know all this in advance (and an updated MR guide would help too!)

I would imagine that 480 is the width of the screen in pixels, and the height of the movie can be up to 320 pixels.

But some widescreen formats produce an image which is less than 320 pixels high - a 'true' 16:9 widescreen ratio movie on the new iPod Touch would be 480 pixels wide by 270 pixels high. By that logic however, a 4:3 format TV broadcast would be 430 pixels wide and 320 pixels high, with 25 pixel black bars either side of the image.

Will be interesting to see how it pans out (excuse the pun).

Here's a few sample resolutions, based on the calculations I used above:

4:3 = 480 x 360
16:10 = 480 x 300
16:9 (1.77:1) = 480 x 270
1.85:1 = 480 x 260
2.21:1 = 480 x 218
