awhile back i replaced my g4's type 2 dvd drive with an a05. now, of course, i need something off one of my old dvd's (which are not recognized by the a05 - even with the hard plastic cover off). my question is - can i just unplug the a05 without unmounting, plug in power and data to the older dvd without physically mounting and get my data. it would require the side cover open, maybe. this of course would save time.

If I remember right, there's no slack on the IDE ribbon... I don't think you could get it to move enough to do this.

otherwise, as long as you're not stupid about it, it could be done...

it will work, i've done this. Of course you must keep the side panel open. Just plug it in! power down the computer first, though.
