iPhone Hacking and iTunes 7.4: Proceed with Caution

Several sites (TUAW, iPhone Atlas) are reporting that Apple's latest iTunes 7.4 update causes incompatibilities with existing Jailbreak/hacking tools. In some cases causing your iPhone to become non-functional:
Quote:
...a number of readers have reported that their iPhones have become non-functional (entering an endless rebooting cycle) after the following process: restoring the iPhone using iTunes 7.4, then attempting jailbreak with Installer.app 2.4 or earlier or other older jailbreaking utilities.
AppTapp (Installer.app) developer Nullriver has posted a possible fix for people with the endless rebooting problem. They have also updated AppTapp (Installer.app) to support the latest iTunes.

This why I would wait until the big update in a week or so before trying to hack your phone

I got the endless reboot problem after unsuccesfully attempting to install Installer.app. My restore from iTunes failed, but the second time it did the full restore without restoring my settings. I still have all of my contacts and stuff, but I had to redo wireless settings, etc.

I'm waiting on my iPhone to go through activation (# transfer really) entirely. I just got it yesterday (one of the best days of my life), and I wanna ask this: should I not get AppTap? Will it brick my iPhone indefinently?

iPhone Non-Functioning

Prior to updating iTunes this morning I decided to uninstall the Install.app. After restarting my iPhone it now no longer activated! Anyone know how to remedy this? Anyone else had this problem. Help!

Yes. I used iActivator prior to issues I'm having today. Now my iPhone is not activated and although it syncs with iTunes, iTunes doesnt' provide the standard menu bar options as before. I would love to restore the iPhone completely and never hack it again.

i personally don't see a reason to upgrade to the new firmware yet. i used the latest version of ifuntastic to change my background screen, cyberduck to add ringtones, and installer app for voice record/blackjack.
how often would i ever use the wireless download option? probably as often as i'd use itunes for purchasing music.... never.

i do have a question to those of you that installed ringtones previously then updated your firmware.... are they louder through itunes compared to using other apps? i would like to think that because you can adjust the volume of tracks in itunes that might help.

cheers

I was frustrated because all I wanted to do use iTunes to restore my iPhone's software, but I guess because I hacked my iPhone, iTunes recognized a problem and would not provide the standard iPhone tabs so that could press 'restore.'

I decided to try the newest AppTapp installer to see if that would work. During the install (it was taking a long time -- 10 minutes) I got suspicious that it wasn't working properly, so I opened iTunes and it was at that time that iTunes recognized that my software was not operational and it gave me the option to restore. 15 minutes later I have a freshly reinstalled iPhone! I don't think I'll mess around with hacking my iPhone anymore. Whew!

I would get it if I were anybody, it's safe, I haven't had an issue yet. Just make sure you sync everything before an iPhone software update. installer.app is the greatest app out, it opperates very much like software update, listing new apps and upgrading the apps right on the phone. Every app that I've tried through installer.app(apptapp) has worked great. Some apps have froze my phone once or twice, but nothing a reset didn't immediatly fix. I love it, especially NES.app, VoiceNotes, and the SSH client.

Thumbs down I second the question... What do you do if you haven't upgraded to iTunes 7.4 yet?

1. I have the latest version of Installer on the iPhone (AppTapp)
2. I haven't touched iTunes 7.4 yet.
3. What do I do to make sure I don't hose anything?

Thanks!
John

Oooooo, so we can get $1.98 ringtones, and access to iTunes thru WiFi to spend even more money? I hope Apple doesnt start playing these games. They should just admit their software isnt bullet proof, and allow 3rd party apps to exist.

Jeez, while I'd love to have 3rd party apps on my iPhone, all these updates make me very very cautious. I think I'll just wait it out until Apple truly opens up the iPhone's OSX for native apps, or if somebody provides a real concrete hack.

Just an FYI.

I have always used the original jailbreak/terminal hack method to change springboard, icons and ringtones, since it was available to do so. I was hesitant to use this new version of iTunes until our friends at Ambrosia (iToner) updated their software. I am one of those people who just cant live without ringtones..

So after the new update of iToner (Ambrosia rocks!), I finally plugged in my iPhone, loaded iTunes, unchecked the sync ringtones tab, clicked apply, and then clicked sync. My iPhone synced flawlessly without any problems, and all my ringtones were there after the sync. I will be using iToner to install any new ringtones, as it is so much easier, but I wanted to let you guys know of my results.

I had numerous issues with itunes 7.4 and Ifuntastic and Apptapp v. 3..0.1. I was finally able to restore my iphone after replacing the framework preferences and was able to unshackle it in ifuntastic but everytime I try to install the apptapp installer it gives me a bootstrap error and goes into recovery mode and I have to restore with itunes and start the whole thing over. Every time. Is their anyway to take the .dmg file and install it through the terminal using the command line that may circumvent the installer? Problem is version 3 of apptapp mounts and doesn't have a program folder to drag and drop into the directory files through the ifuntastic file manager. Either way, if I could get the installer package onto my iphone through the terminal or through ifuntastic it might avoid the bootstrap error and prevent it from going into recovery mode again.

Also anybody know how to restore to the original default application icons? Ifuntastic jacked mine all up when I changed my background image and they don't have border transparency over the wallpaper. Also the names are all funky.

activating with itunes 7.4

Hi

I have a question just brought back an iphone from US and want to use that new iphonesimfree.app to unlock my iphone. The problem is i have activated it yet. So do i need to activate it with a 3rd party hack program such as iactivator to get access to the phone, as itunes will only allow at&t users to activate and i am on Vodafone.

I heard that are problems when you have itunes 7.4 to activate it using iactivator? any comments

Maybe i should use an older version of itunes but what will happen if i upgrade to 7.4.

If you use the newest version of INdependence, you'll be fine. My iPhone was activated using this method and works great.

Unhappy iNdependence caused constant reboot problems

I have a new iphone (firmware 1.0.2)
that i did not activate. I used iNdependence (i have a macbook pro, intel and intunes 7.3.2) and it caused the iphone to go into constant reboot.
I can get it to the yellow triangle (Please connect to iTunes) and perform a restore from iTunes but the restore does not do anything. it still is stuck in constant reboot.

Any advice for this situation would be appreciated.
I downloaded AppTapp nstaller but it says it only works with iTunes 7.4 which I can not find a download of so I have not run AppTapp yet.

please help
