OS on iPod classic?

I'm just wondering if the iPod classic is running an upgraded version of the old iPod OS, or if it's running some kind of really slimmed down version of OS X?

I would think Steve would have made a big deal out of it if they were infact running OS X, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
