Assignment 15:

The topic for September 2007 is "Things That Fly". The runner-up, "Your Place", will automatically go back into next month's topic voting.

The idea is that members go out and try to shoot something relevant to the topic until the end of this month. What is "relevant" is up for interpretation by you and by us, of course.

You must have taken the picture yourself between September 9th to 30th, 2007 in your respective timezones (we'll use the honor system for this one). If you took a picture that fits the assignment topic, but was taken earlier before September 9th, 2007, post it at <insert url here>.

Anyone can enter. Doesn't matter if the photo was taken with a camera-phone, small point and shoot camera, or DSLR. They should be photos you think are GOOD rather than just snapshots. Don't just post anything that fits the topic. That isn't the point. Post something you can be proud of.

If you have never done this before: READ THE RULES BEFORE YOU POST. The rules are rather basic, and a lot of it is common sense, but since we're self-moderated, we don't expect any bone-heads breaking all the rules just because they think they're an exception. Doesn't matter how good your photography is.

Happy shooting.

Sorry guys about being a late to start it off here; thanks to forum member srf4real for kicking me into gear.

The excuse? Long story short my computer at home hasn't had internet for more than a week now... I've been trying to get on in other places, and this responsibility just went into the back part of my mind.

Happy Shooting!

I could post more than one image if it was on the same subject, right?

Never got its chance to fly...

From the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart:

land_speed(6964)r.jpg

Mercedes-Benz's 1939 T 80, designed by Ferdinand Porsche

The T80 was fitted with the still-in-development Mercedes-Benz DB 603 Arrow V-12 aircraft engine, a 44,500cc (44.5 liter) motor designed to generate 3,500 horsepower. To get the power to the ground, there's not only four driven rear wheels but this car also implimented traction control technology...almost 70 years ago

When Eyston and Cobb were battling on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the 350-370mph range, the T80 had a design speed of 465mph (750kph) . Had it not been for WW-II, this roadrunner would have had its chance to fly.

In 1947, Cobb raised the land speed record to 394 mph, which was still 70mph slower than the T80's design speed. Seventeen years later, the turbojet "Green Monster" broke through at 544mph, but Cobb's record wasn't exceeded by any conventional-engined vehicle ever. Perhaps this is why fans of the T80 still beg Mercedes to restore her for the explicit purpose of taking her out for the speed run that she never had a chance to get.

Wow, I love that butterfly shot EastCoastFlyer!
I was out in the garden reading when I saw this little fella hovering. He barely stayed still long enough for me to get a photo.
EDIT: The colours look washed out on Safari.

That's a good and sharp bee. And the colors only look washed out on the resized image thumbnail on this page. Teh colors are veryy pretty when I click on the image for your original...:D

I don't think its a bee. I think it's a wasp of some sort, It's only half the size of the bees we get around here.

-------Entries Are Now CLOSED--------

Thanks to everyone who participated! I don't really know what we want to do now–we can vote as to which photo is best. If anyone thinks this is the right course, say "yea" and I'll open up a poll.

I'll be setting up the October topic selections any time now...

*Poll Up*

Closes in 10 days.

Also, after this month I'm going to have to hand it off to someone else--my schedule has just become too jam-packed to be able to run the competition.

Any takers?
