The one next to the battery meter. It only comes up after I play hacked NES games. Sorry if this has been posted.

...it looks like a Nintendo controller to me.

There is no "close"--until you reboot the phone, that application will be running.
Actually, if you back out of the game by hitting "ROM list" then the icon disappears. The icon just shows that you're currently in the middle of a game...but really doesn't serve much of a purpose.
 
After your done playing the NES game if you hold down the Home key for 5 seconds it shuts down the program running that should get rid of the controller icon on the status bar.

Interesting. I suppose that would be a useful feature for those people with lots of extra apps installed on their iPhones.
