Three years before a native Quartz OpenOffice for OS X

That sucks, its because some core open office APIs are going to change for 2.0. The windows and linux release is 2005 Q2, still extremely far off
 
What about 1.0?

But does that mean we won't get OpenOffice 1.0 or 1.1 at all? That's not clear to me.

From the OpenOffice FAQ:

"Work will be ongoing to create a stable, bug-free port based on OpenOffice.org 1.0.1 (and later 1.1), which will include both the XWindows version and a Mac OS X Quartz/Aqua graphics version, but more developers are needed. Everyone is invited to join the project and lend a hand"

Sounds like that's still on track, to me. Version 2.0 is a separate issue, maybe.

Anyone know?
 
something i don't understand about this project is the reason they have so few people working on it, from the site I understand that they have only a hand full of people working on it! this is a very important app for OS X! I understand why apple wont help M$ politics could be a reason or they will launch their own suit soon I don't know I hope that more people can join and help them port the App!

As far as I understand it the problem is only the Aquafied version. We'll get Version 1.1 using X11 sooner.

I just downloaded X11 and OpenOffice- I am very impressed. It's pretty good for a free program, apart from being pretty bulky, and the windows 95 look. A native OS X version would be super.
 
I too am very impressed with OpenOffice on my iBook, but my school was offering a 2 computer license of Office X for $99, so I bought that. I'll still keep OO on my computer to keep up with the development, but for the time being, it looks like it's still Microsoft for me. I really like not having to fire up X11. Hopefully I can make the switch come 2005, when the new Aqua version comes out.

The story continues.....

TheRegister has a statement from one of the developers of the aqua port. They are trying to get an intermediate 1.5 release out but desparately need help with the coding.

I think its a bit strange that Open Office doesn't seem to find to much interest in the Mac community. Or am I wrong here?

I don't say that Open Office is a real 'Mac Application'. Indeed I find it as confusing and non intuitive as MS Office. But it is an alternative. At work I use it about 90% of the time and MS Office only for some very rare cases.

On OS X it is definitely one of the major pieces in the application mosaic I need to introduce a Mac into our company environment.
