Panther 7B44 Client, Xcode and Upcoming iApp Updates

Apple continues their speedy development on Panther and provided developers with another seed -- Panther 7B44.

Per usual, this seed provides few details on specific improvements, but reportedly includes changes to Filevault's file structure.

Unrelated to Panther seeds, but of more interest to most users is reports that a couple of iApps will be seeing upgrades in the next few weeks... with updates to iSync and iCal to versions 1.2 and 1.5, respectively.

iSync was recently updated to version 1.1 in early June. The 1.1 upgrade added more phone suppport and Bookmark syncing.

iCal, however, remains at a 1.0.2 version number, and has not seen significant updates since its release.

Current Panther builds contain early versions of iCal 1.5, which contains significant improvements in performance, calender event scheduling and user interface.

I'm glad to hear some development on iCal and iSync ... maybe iSync will finally support my LG phone over USB? That would be nice! Mmmm and a faster iCal .. I'd be very disappointed if iCal wasn't 100 times faster than in its current form..

Good point. I couldn't remember anything wrong will iCal until you mentioned that. Now that I think about it, double clicking is really slow. Also, there is a bug when you double click on a date to enter something, it opens up a text block in the next day. Very frustrating.

Hopefully it will see the same speed increase as it did from version 1.0 to 1.0.1/2.

I'm hoping that iSync will keep adding more phones. I'd rather not have to buy a PDA if I can help it.

I'd prefer at least 78 or so "buttons" on my keyboard

It would be nice if they add better Palm support to iCal too. Palm desktop for Mac stinks, to put it mildly, but iCal dosen't support memos.

Cool iChat AV in 7B44

Panther Build 7B44 ROCKS and is nearing completion. I have tested builds since they have started and all I can say is wow. The Finder is VASTLY improved and is about 60% faster than 10.2. I have run into one problem so far while testing 7B44 and that's iChatAV video problem. Every build I have tested of Panther has not returned ANY video via iChat. Apps like Evocam and ohphone seem to send video fine.

cheers,
tim

I was only browsing these forums when Jag was in beta testing, did more frequent builds indicate it was nearing release or is it irrelevant?

Good news about the iApps. The Panther ones are good, nice to see the development is heading Jags way too. 10.2.7 contains a .5 release of Safari, which has solved all my crashing bugs thank god.

iCal has developed significantly in Panther, I mean the amount at which Mail has developed. The drawer in is very cool, so this new version should impress people not familiar with Panther builds.

Talking

Yay on the iSync and iCal updates! I love iCal but it's still a little pokey as far as speed... as far as iSync, why isn't the Motorola v.120 supported!?

It's a popular phone! I have the USB cable and can use it as a wireless modem on my iBook when I need it, but iSync won't work with it.

Could you give more details? Of all the apps, I've been wanting both Mail and iCal to be updated the most. I've been very happy with the updates that Mail has received so far (I'm only on 7B21), but have been very disappointed that Apple has seemed to ignore iCal.

Other than speed and general responsiveness, my three biggest complaints are: you can't have alarms set on for new appointments as a default, but must manually turn them on; the task list is as basic as it gets -- I'd like to see increased functionality there; lack of integration with Microsoft Exchange (especially via Mail.app when interfacing with Outlook users.)

New iApps: Any sign of a new iPhoto?

warning: rant
Digital photos are the #1 use I've got for my Mac - and iPhoto dies (crawls, anyway) at about 2000-3000 pics. There's gotta be a better implementation. I'm not the only guy out there with a digital camera. More and more, people are going to have 10,000+ photos (I do now), and while my old Nikon 990 photos were 300k each (XGA, fine JPG) the ones from my newer 10D are over 2Meg.

I've seen lengthy and convoluted articles about how to use iPhoto library manager and DVD archives of pictures to obtain performance, but that's pretty lame. Anyway, I don't have a Superdrive.

Apple: Pleeze!

One thing about the iApps is that they discourage 3rd party people from investing in credible alternaties. Apple, if you're going to be the only photo management game in town, you need to fix it so my 1Ghz MDD, 1.75G RAM can handle my photo collection.

btw, if any of you know of a really great alternative for storing, viewing, organizing my photos I'd be delighted. On windoze I was using fototime's app, which was great, but I've deep-six'd the dark side, so now I'm stuck.

edit: ps: Anyone tried iPhoto under Panther? Is it better??

Excellent that the iApps are about to be updated.

iCal: there is absolutely no reason why it should be as slow as it is.

I would use it more, but its quite painful to use. I hope the performance increase is significant.

It opens on the next day sometimes because of the following: If you have your preferences set for your day to end at 6pm and you double click on a calendar day AFTER 6 pm, it will jump to the next day.

Solution: change your preferences to reflect a 24-hour day.

iCal should be able to do events that go from 10 PM to 1AM. There's no reason why we can't have wrap around events. I'm using Entourage now. I like having it all in one place.

Xcode

Does / will Xcode have code insight?

Code Insight - where the IDE will display all attributes and Methods for a given class for example, upon typing "myObject." it will list all attributes and methods?

Since using code insight for years and years in Delphi and Java I cannot live without it!

Fortunately, xcode will have code completion also.. :-)

iSync vs. proxy-based firewalls

Anyone know if iSync will add support for syncing to .Mac through a http-proxy-based firewall?

With both iSync and Backup lacking this feature, .Mac is severely hampered for my use.
