This came up in another thread, but I thought it deserved its own dedicated one:

When I turn my Touch off (full power-off), then turn it back on, it eats the battery.

This has already happened several times. Just today, turned it off around 8:45 AM with 50% battery. Now (12:12 PM), turned it on, and my half-green bar was replaced with a thin red sliver, and I got the "low battery - 20% warning." Then, after clearing the warning, it's back "up" to a white bar showing 25-30%.

Clearly, there's something in the power-down & reboot that's power intensive. It's NOT time-dependent: I've gotten the same problem whether powered down for 8 hours or 3.5.

Others finding this too?

ADDITION: Just tried it again - a power-down & power-up 5 min. after the last. Again, got the battery red status & warning message. Then, after a minute or so, it's white again - but noticeably less so than the last time, now less than 1/4th. You could probably take a topped-off device and get it down to 50% by doing this a few times - say, the number of times you might have to turn on & off on a flight with a few connections?

I'm guessing that may be a software issue as that power would have to go somewhere when you turn the device off and on like that and it isn't just disappearing. Probably an issue as to how the device reads the battery level.

From my experience, it appears to be something more than a software glitch because I've seen the battery "recover" soon after the initial red bar to significantly less than what it should be, as the original poster reports. Maybe it's just my eyes/brain confusing me? Again, I haven't tried it thoroughly, but my issue is with the Week 37. The Week 38 doesn't seem to have this problem so far.

Interesting... just tried this with my week 38. It certainly does eat a buttload of the battery capacity when I power-off/power-on.

Yeah, this is what has been my experience with almost every portable device that I've ever owned (at least the ones that actually have an OS to boot/shut down).

I just tried shutting it off and turning it back on. I was at 3/4 power and now have a warning that I only have 20% remaining. It's either that there was not as much power as was displayed before turning off and turning off the device and restarting somehow re-reads the battery level properly or that its some sort of software issue that just doesn't read the battery properly. As I'm typing this the battery level is slowly climbing back up but not quite to where it was before. I mean that much juice can't just disappear when shutting the device off. What would it use it for? The thing would get HOT from using that much juice in that short a period of time!

This happens with almost every portable device I have (cell phone, 4G iPod, iPod Nano, etc.). You turn the thing on and off and the battery loses and gains battery "bars." As long as the thing stays on I'm happy...and as a side note, my Touch doesn't have this problem.
