What's the purpose of having a smart folder?

Wouldn't it be more wise to setup a rule to move the specified email to an actual folder? I find this smart folder function to be kinda useless ... someone tell me how it would be useful

My roommate uses my Mac, but she's not familiar with OS X. So I have a Smart Folder on my desktop to collect all here MS Office files in, so she wont have to go digging for them.
