Can standard laptop drives be placed in the powerbook?

yes standard 2.5 inch hard drives can be placed in.

Be forewarned that if you replace it with a faster drive, your battery life will lessen.

sometimes considerably, so do watch out.

you can also buy an external enclosure for your old drive, and use it as a spare or an extra. this came in handy after the blackout when the power-on surge fried an internal HD in my house...
