Mail doing funny things with attachments

A friend has told me that emails sent from mail have an attachment (and occasionally several of them) entitled unnamed.txt.
It's very frustrating when some office systems quarantine all emails with attachments.

Any ideas?

Go to preferences and in composing you probably have Rich Text selected. Change it to Plain Text. Rich text sends everything you compose as an attachment. It does this to save the formatting of the original text so that when it's opened it looks exactly as you composed it.
 
You may be able to keep it from doing this by setting Preferences the right way. For example, it could be than if you pick "Rich Text" for "Format" setting in the Composing section, it sends the rich text of your message followed by a plain text version as an attachment. Another possibility is that you have a Signature in other than plain text, and it is being sent as an attachment. You could try tinkering with your settings and see if that helps.

I have gotten rid of all the rtf. All that hassle's not worth it for a couple of bold chars in a sig.
and now, I am told, it is fine.
You guys are stars. Thanks. Let's hope Mail is tweaked a bit in 10.3; cause it's a little unstable at the moment, even on my spanking new 17" 1GHz iMac with 512 MB of RAM

When sending/receiving biggish attachments, occasionally it just gets stroppy and beach balls on me.
It also doesn't like my IMAP account a great deal.
It's improving, but it has crashed a couple of times, and I have (gasp) considered going back to M$ Entourage.
(but only briefly, and I showered after)

Do you have a broadband connection? Also what do you consider a large attachment?

I'm asking these questions because I've never had an ounce of trouble with Mail and that's why I use it. I'm just trying to determine if maybe it's the situation your in or if Mail would have the same issues if my setup was similar to yours.

Unfortunately, I do not have a broadband connection, just a dialup, which I'm sure is contributing to the problem. Thus, anything more than about 300K is a large attachment.
I should confess, Mail is much better on my 1GHz G4 than it was on my 366GHz G3. Funny, that.
I think it's time I got some broadband happening.

I agree, about the chance that it's the modem causing problems. As I see it the longer it takes to move data the more chance somethings going to happen to cause a glitch.
