Hey I was just looking for the speakers and was wondering if 5.1 speakers would work with G5's sound card or i have to get 2.1?
I mean if G5's sound card is not designed for 5.1, there isn't much reason to get 5.1, is there? So is G5's sound card work with 5.1 speakers or not? And what's the advantage 5.1 over 2.1? Sometimes i see 5.1 and 2.1 for the same price...

What do you suggest?

The G5 doesn't have seperate channels for sound like many PC sound cards, the only audio outputs are optical and stereo, the only 5.1 speakers that will work with the G5 are the ones with an optical input (although coaxial will work, you'll have to get a converter).

5.1 will only make a difference in some games that support surround sound and DVDs and some movie files with 5.1 support so unless you want the fll effect of surround sound then 2.1 should be fine for most needs.

Well from 5.1 systems which would be the good ones? the ones that come with digital optical connector.
And where can i get a converter?

I've always liked Altec Lansing's products (Lansing is actually the "L" in "JBL"), so these would be a pretty good bet. I think I ran these buy a sound engineer friend and he said they'd be pretty good for a consumer 5.1 system.

But do they come with optical connector thing? And do you know where one can get a converter if they don't....

These also get nice things said about. But they don't come with optical out nor have headphones jack...

Won't work unless you get something like this, those speakers have individual connections for each speaker, not an optical/coaxial connector which is decoded for all the speakers, a good set with an optical in is this Logitech:

A bit pricey though, I'm not sure what cheaper ones have an optical/coaxial in...

yeah, altec doesnt use anything fancy, just your standard 1/8th headphone jack. if you are looking for some good 2.1's go to your local reseller or apple store, most likely they have some jbl creature speakers set up, they sound great and they look awesome.
