MBP Won't read Leopard DVD?!

I joined specifically to start this thread, possibly get some answers.

I bought OS X Leopard tonight and whenever I put it in the drive of my MBP, it just spits it back out.
15.4" 2.16ghz 2gb ram MBP, everything has worked perfectly except this.
it accepts the disc, sits there, clicks a bit and spits it back out after about 15 seconds. It doesn't even load on the desktop.
has this happened for anyone else?
I tried resetting it how they described in another forum and still nothing.

I even tried putting a DVD into it to see if my drive was shot, but it ran fine.

I'm having the exact same problem. Thankfully I have an extra Mac and a FireWire cable handy. If you can, boot your other Mac into target disk mode and then you should be able to install it on the primary Mac.
 
Same problem here on my dual 2ghz G5.

I put the disc in, 10-20 seconds later it comes right back out. My PB G4 reads the disc just fine.

Tried to install it to my G5 by booting up my G5 in target mode. My G4 doesn't show the volume mounting!

So then I tried using my G4 in target mode with the disc in it... WOOHOO I got the install disc image to appear on my G5 desktop.

Restart the G5 to install... and my G5 volume is not a choice for destination volumes (but the G4 is!)

What did I spend 129 bucks on?!

unfortunately, only one mac here.
I'm a 17-year old student with a part-time job
lucky enough to have one mac hahaha

this is quite frustrating though.
 
No amount of spite seems to be solving this one.

I don't think there's any way to make progress here.
 
There are quite a few reports of this over on the Apple discussion forums.
With a couple of possible solutions..
It seems often, some Macs will recognise the DVD, whereas others will not.
Someone found that putting the DVD into a mac that did recognise it, copying it to a blank DVD, it then worked on the Mac that had a problem reading the original disk! Go figure..
Someone else said that simply using one of those special DVD lens cleaning disks was sufficient to make the original install DVD work.

I read those, but nothing was really conclusive.
and my laptop was just purchased in May 2007, it can't be that dirty!
Steve Jobs needs to get the gears turning on this one, or we may just have to go back to what we trusted...

I had the same problem and i used a usb dvd drive to load leopard. worked flawlessly! i think i paid about 60 bucks at a local computer store! :)

I contacted apple and they seem to think its the drive ! but i couldnt finish troubleshooting with them as i didnt have the tiger disks on hand!

Thankfully, I do still have my C64 though :D

So the simple $130 OS upgrade has turned into a $200 hardware and software purchase, real simple Apple.

And to think they gloated about only having one version.
maybe they'll come out with a second that comes with a new DVD drive...which probably won't work.
 
okay let's experiment here

post your disc burning info to compare, see if maybe it's a specific kind of drive that apple made a bad decision with...

still, inconclusive.

well i have no idea, but apple better post a fix or something for this
i don't feel like paying another $60 for a DVD drive i'll probably only use once to install Leopard.
 
i wonder for now since u purchased it, if you go to the store and get it off their server. That's what they normally do when they need to reinstall the OS for fixes. BUt you should be able to use your disk. I wonder if its a different type/brand of disk?

I tried using my dads G5 iMac to help me out.

Booted up my dual G5 in target mode, it mounted just fine to the iMac. Opened the install disc and restarted as usual.

When I got to volume destination only the iMac was visible... still no dual G5. I am really clueless as to what the problem is, but it sounds like its more than a DVD drive issue (at least in my case).

You'd think apple would avoid such inconsistency.
I think we may finally understand why the apple logo has a piece missing :\
 
Also, can someone point me to discussions on this issue elsewhere? I'd like to keep up to date on what people are doing/possible solutions. sigh.
 
I was going to backup the disc and use that but i discovered my external drive worked so that saved me the trouble but that is definately a route i would consider. Maybe even parition your hard drive and put a copy on there that you can run the install from!!

Like i say i didnt have to persue these options as the external drive seemed to do the trick.

tis a shame but i bet there is a copy that works on the net, normally i would be against this, but hey!! apple dropped the ball here !!!!!!!!!
 
So, so far our possible solutions are:

external DVD drive
partition external HDD and load DMG there (please explain how if MBP spits it out)
and just waiting for apple?
 
I should mentione after reinserting like 50 times i finally got it where it owuld read the disc only to have it fail 50% through the validation!! so if it did this during the install i dont know what kind of troubles that would cause !

you'd have to use another comp to make a copy .... :-( maybe you have a friend you could impose on

Unfortunately, my friends are all archaic nimrods running windows.
could it still make a disc copy?
crap, I don't have DL DVD's

at least we aren't deep into the problem like those poor guys with the blue screen.

I would think you could image the disc and make a copy on a windows machne but you will need DL discs!

Maybe you could find an excuse to find an external dvd burner !! lol :) then your troubles are over !!!! :) I think mine is an LG $60 usb 2 job. got it at a local pc retail store lol DOH!!

**** Is only a guess that its the disc causing toruble, trying to install a burnt disc may change nothing!! keep that in mind but its worth a try ! I suspect its a software/hardware problem rather than the dvd ... but then again i am only guessing, perhaps some one more qualified will render s guess.
 
Man, I am MacFan and this apple's recent fiascos are driving me nuts. Why would my DVD drive not read the disc? it just spits out.

piratebay-it. you've a legal copy then you can torrent it. tomorrow replace the disk at store :cool:
