Mac OS X Leopard Support Issues and Cool Features

The launch of Mac OS X Leopard has generated a lot of discussion in our Forums resulting in 8015 new posts on Friday. This comes second to the previous one-day record of 8143 posts that was achieved on iPhone launch day.

To organize this volume of posts, we've split the Mac OS X forum into:

- Mac OS X
- Mac OS X Help and Troubleshooting
- Mac OS X 10.4 and Earlier
- Leopard Meetup Events

Please direct your posts to the appropriate forum.

Here are a couple of solutions to some early problems:

- Solution to the "Installer Blue Screen" hang - blamed on Application Enhancer
- Solution to Hard Disk not appearing on Install "Choose a Destination".
- Tips from Apple for iChat backdrop effects.
- Apple has already issued a Software Update Login & Keychain Update 1.0 which addresses issues with old account passwords, connecting to some 802.11b/g wireless networks and FileVault password changes.
- Guide: List of Apps not compatible with Leopard

And some interesting new Leopard features:

- Photo Mosaic Screensaver: Choose a photo album from the Desktop & Screen Saver control panel, then click on the 3rd "Display Style" (Mosaic)
- iTunes Visualizers (iTunes -> View -> Visualizer): Lathe, Jelly and Stix
- Spotlight can be used as a calculator
- Control Panel -> Speech -> Text to Speech. New Alex Voice in Leopard.
- DVD Player with Chapter Index and Full Screen Controls
- Retro and Security screensavers are included in the Developer Tools (instructions)

too bad for the video pros using the new Premier CS3...

but i wonder if apple was being a douche and purposefully crapping out on acrobat, since Preview now does .PDF editing... but even if not, Acrobat is a big elephant while Preview is quite snappy... so it's all good.

FrontRow Screensaver

The FrontRow application has its own screensaver now.

When it tries to turn on, the screen shows heavy signs of corruption, and can be rectified by returning to the main FrontRow menu.

Anyone else?

Am I the only one not getting/having trouble with this mosaic screensaver?

so i click on a folder of a bunch of pictures and it makes this big mosaic. The problem is....only three pictures are used so the mosaic effect is kind of ...lame.

the other pictures appear in those transitional spot but the mosaic tiles are made up of only three pictures. I have no idea why. I have tried switching the folder and still.

Found the Intro Video

I found where the intro video (and an MP3 of the audio) is stored:

1. Go to Computer > Hard Drive > System > Library > Core Services.
2. Right-click on 'Setup Assistant' and choose 'Show Package Contents'.
3. In the window that opens, open Contents > Resources.
4. Right-click on 'Transition Section.bundle' and choose 'Show Package Contents'.
5. In the window that opens, open Contents > Resources.

You'll see 'intro-sound.mp3' and 'intro.mov' - just open both of these up, and put the audio starting at the beginning of the video (I just used QuickTime Pro to paste the audio track on top of the video track; there's some extra audio at the end). There you have it!

I really liked the music - it was quite catchy.

not sure it's possible to screenshot screensavers... but let me try to explain:

it displays one of your images in full screen... then that image very slowly fades back, and you notice that other images from your other albums are beginning to display all around the main start image... it's like zooming out of a square on a matrix... so it slowly zooms back, and when it becomes very far away, the inclusion of all the other images have generated another image that is in your iPhoto library...

obviously this effect works best if there are thousands of images in your iphoto...

It does this with your photos

http://www.dreden.com/wp-content/upl...edy_Mosaic.jpg

and in a constant zoom-out. So the mosaic'd picture then becomes one of the many images making up the next mosaic'd image.

I'm starting to have issues with Leopard on my MacBook. Everything appears yellowish when using the iSight camera in both iChat and Photo Booth.

Also, the dock has a frozen a few times.

Oh well.

You realise everyone is going to be looking to see if you have any naughty images in that mosaic.

Looking at the software compatibility lists - I'm going to have to wait a while before moving to Leopard. I rely on too many of those "problem" apps for work. CS3 updates won't be out until January, so even if I talk my boss into moving to CS3 (which is apparently "in the works", but not guaranteed) I'd likely see issues.

It's too bad, but none of Leopard's new features are "must have" for me so it's more of a "ooh, shiny, I want it" issue. I've already got an rsync-based backup system, so Time Machine will only be adding eye candy. I was hoping to move to iChat with 10.5, but Adium still works just fine. Spaces would be nice, but I only use VirtueDesktops occasionally as it is. Quicklook is probably handy; but I've lived without it so far.

There's still just a twinge of jealousy at this end, though.

The mosaic isn't working for me in addition to not having a transparent menu. Also the screen blinks purple for a second when I maximize a window from the dock.

When I select mosaic in the preview it says "You must have an iPhoto Library to run the Mosaic screen save."

Not sure if this of any interest: about the mosaic screensaver. If you select for example 'Nature pattern', it will use the images in that category as 'base' images. You can then also change the speed of the animation. If you select an iphoto filmroll, it will use those images as the basis. However, you cannot change the animation speed (but it will use the speed you set earlier on).

oh i've been meaning to ask: i no longer have a splash screen when booting into Mac OS X... like it no longer says "Mac OS X is start up" (or whatever it use to say) and show the progress bar... it just goes from the grey apple icon and loading indicator, to a blue screen, to my desktop... (but it's not slow)

is there no more splash screen in 10.5?

edit: forgot to mention that i did do a clean install...
