the startup sound prefpane doesn't seem to be working on leopard and I really need to get rid that of startup sound because I use my mac mostly during lectures and in Library ..

ANY help will be appreciated.

wish Apple had just got rid of this stupid thing or had given us an option to do so.

thanks guys .... apparently the download able version of tinker tool is not leopard ready .. but they plan to release one (and its all done as well) in november ...

I'll try the mute thing till then ...

The startup chime isn't stupid.

It's a been Macintosh staple for many years!

This worked for me (attached, freeware): StartupSoundPrefPane11b1
It'll show up under your System Prefs as Startup Sound, just click 'mute' and you won't get the chime.

Edit: Ooops.... just re-read and you've got it already (duh) .... try reinstalling it again? GL
