Ok, here is the question. Of these three names, why do we most always use the Motorola name? Is there any specific reason?

Altivec is Motorolas name and the velocity engine is apple's own name for it. Apple used it because it has a more market appeal and so on, it just sounds important.

When is VMX even used?

Altivec is what people remember, and it is shorter the velocity whichout the 'engine' part of the name.

😛

VMX is the official name within the architecture: Vector Multimedia Extensions or something like that. It's what was out there before any witty marketing people got involved.
