Hee, hee, the oldest is blank, and the latest "failed!!" I leave it plugged in all evening when I get home, which is for about 4 hours before bed, and it runs from when I get up until I leave for the office, which is also 3 hours. I initially read here that it will automatically pick up the back up when you replug it in. Does the external HD that I use have to be "dedicated" to Time Machine??? I could easily erase the other stuff I have on there or restart TM from scratch, if that's possible. Also, I thought about leaving it on all nite, but the bottom of my Mac Book Pro gets really hot. I'm concerned that may damage the computer???? Frank
I had issues very, very similar to yours. Here is what I think: you have not yet completed a full backup, because most likely something is interrupting the process (an auto-logout or going to sleep---see below). When this happens, it takes
forever for TM to figure out what it has left to do; hence you see "preparing" for hours and then it seems to take hours more to back up more that a few KB. Eventually, it does complete if you make sure your system stays awake and you stay logged in. It appears from your latest post you're now running OK, but for anyone else experiencing these symptoms, here is what I'd suggest:
1) start over--turn off TM, then wipe the backup off your external by erasing it. I believe it is recommended to have a dedicated partition for TM; you don't have to dedicate the whole drive, but you should create a separate partition for your backups. I have a 500gb external that I've divided about 50/50 for this purpose.
2) before beginning your first backup, complete the following:
- disable the screen saver
- under System Preferences-->Security, disable "Log out after X minutes of inactivity"
- under System Preferences-->Energy Saver, set the computer to never go to sleep. Display sleep should be OK, but you can also disable this to be on the safe side
- under System Preferences-->Spotlight-->Privacy, prevent indexing of your TM partition
3) Now go to TM Preferences and select your newly-created partition as your backup disk, and then turn on TM. Allow several hours (or better yet - overnight) for the initial backup to complete.
4) After the initial backup is complete (check TM Preferences to verify this), reverse the settings changes you made in step 2, except I'd recommend to continue disabling Spotlight indexing of your TM partition.
Good luck.
