Ever since I saw the 3.5" screen of the iPhone/iPod touch I've thought - perfect comic book reader (.cbr, .cbz). Has anybody written one yet??

Found one, sort of. Seems to use Safari and a wifi connection (which is a bummer since we have the hacked device anyway):

jcomix

Ok well you may have found this already but there is a Japanese app called iComic (or iphonecomic) which is available via googlecode http://code.google.com/p/iphonecomic/.

It's only available in Japanese (or Korean) so far.

Also, I get the impression it only handles .zip files and not .cbr or similar.

I haven't used it (yet) myself so can't give an opinion.

Does anyone know if this app comes up on any of the sources/repos and if so which one/s?

I wish there was simply an option to view full res images in the default photo viewer. The ui is ace for scrolling and zooming in on manga and comic books, but the automatic scaling of images to 480x320 makes any further zooming useless - I could live quite happily with an upper limit like 960x640. The only stuff that is readable on the touch are strips like Calvin & Hobbes ie. those with few panes and big text. I'd LOVE to read my scanlated manga on there, but the scaling makes the text pretty much unreadable :(

keeps crashing for me so far

EDIT: Updated version on installer that works fine with .zip files. Also jComix is there now (which reads .cbr files natively) works great too - the source to add for that one is http://www.penjuinlabs.com/ipod

Between the two of them I'm reading zip and cbr files - they need to work together and make a version for both e.g. iCDisplay :D

EDIT: I should point out jcomix no longer needs a wi-fi connection (except to transfer the comics) though it still uses safara as the reader - very good!

Thanks for the source, that's great.

(...Hmmm I have so many sources now, I really need to figure out how to back them up... take ages to enter them all again...)

UPDATE: For those Japanese-/Korean-impaired users there is an English menu patch thingy here http://www.iphoneskinning.com/2007/12/iphone-comic-reader.html

The version of iComic on installer (under multimedia..not sure if it's there by default but I also have Shai's repo which hsa a list of all sources) has the English as default now!

iComic is ace! Just what I was looking for!

I have a question though - does it reset the saved position in zips after you sync or transfer files? Slightly annoying that I lost the saved position in all my zips, but I'm not sure if it was because I synced the Touch with iTunes, or because I put a few more zip files in the directory via Cyberduck.

Ok so I'm reviving a dead thread, but thought you guys would want this.

http://www.penjuinlabs.com/blog/?p=21

It's called jComix. It's in English and works great. It's a bit of a pain to transfer your CBR files, but besides that it's great.

Wow, not only did you revive a dead thread, but you didn't even read the thread.

jComix was already listed here!!!!

Seriously, if you're too lazy to read 5 posts, at least do a thread search to see if your great find was already found a year ago.

and yes, please buy the comics if you end up reading them regularly, the comic business can't afford a digital revolution like the Movie and Music industries.

Hey this might help.
software name ""iphone manga converter" that using for convert manga and put them into your personal web server then view them over wifi using safari on iphone.
try googling it. "iphone manga converter" you will see a lot.

Ok, Ok, guys, you all wanted a decent comic book reader. I, Philip Orr and Paul Holden, Judge Dread, 89ers, amongst others have put this together.

The Murderdrome comic has been submitted to the AppStore for review.

that looks excellent, any info on price ect?

Maybe my PJ Holden sketch will finally be worth something? (joking :) )

i got an email back from the comicbooklover developers and they say they are thrashing away on an iphone app at the moment!!!

looks like you may have competition lads!!!

Michael.

This is what I'm doing for now.

I can't seem to find a .cbr reader that is in the app store that I don't have to jailbreak my iphone for at the moment. So this is what I've been doing and it works great for me.

I take the .cbr file and use Stuffit Expander (I'm on mac) to unzip it or expand it or what have you.

The resulting file is a folder with all the .jpg of the comic I want to read.

I use an app from the app store called "Files" for $2.99 which allows you to store and view documents on your iPhone or iPod Touch or iPad transferring them from your Mac or PC.

Transfer your new folders full of .jpg of your comics and bingo bango bongo, read them on your iPhone or iPod touch.

I have an iPhone 3GS. This makes me really want an iPad now.
