I'm not sure I understand but you can change the file type from movies to TV shows and just use genres to catagorize from documentaries and Porn and Action and Comedy

Subler will do this for you quickly and easily. I've done it on movies and TV shows.

Here's mine. It has taken about 5 years to build it this big. Not as large as some on here, but still good sized I think. Everything is tagged, except maybe a couple new TV show episodes I haven't gotten to yet.

i'd like to know that as well actually. i got tv shows and movies spread over 3 external hdds and every time i turn off the hdds and back on later. all the covers are missing unless i do "get info" one after another which can take quiet a while

Here's a script. I haven't tried it myself and it's from 2006, so I can't vouch for its effectiveness.

This might be an alternate method, something I found over at iLounge:

No really easy way, but this works:
- select all the songs that were updated (or just select all)
- Change a field in iTunes that you don't use yet, like maybe Grouping, Comment or Disk X of X, and change them all to a "A" or whatever.
- Click Ok. After the update, go back and change the field to "" and update again.

Not pretty but it beats doing all the songs one at a time.

Again, I haven't used this myself, so can't say whether or not it will work.

iFlicks give you the option to edit metatags on existing itunes files. Mark the files you want to edit and acces the "Service" menu. There should be something like "Open in iFlicks" or "edit in iFlicks" where you can edit any way you like, manually or automatic and then just send them back to itunes. In this case the files are not resent but the metadata is...

i actually used iFlicks to muxe those files for iTunes in the first place and i got movie covers and everything tagged but as soon as i turn off the external hdd and turn it back on later, the cover doesnt appear by itself unless i "refresh" each and every file again, so frustrating with a huge library.

Building from scratch for an Apple TV 3. It's a mixed collection of Blu-Ray remuxes using subler and reencoding using handbrake. iDentify was used for tagging with some IDMB tags having to be manually entered for the correct tags to come up.

Looks like your well on your way. It's a time consuming task, but very rewarding in the end when u have an instant HD digital library

Yes; I had quite the iTunes Movie library some time ago and then had to wipe my HDD clean! Anywho, I've update several more movies, this is where I'm at now!:

Seeing this thread brought back memories of when I had 60 or so films in iTunes, all DVD rips at awful quality just for my iPod. My iPhoto library grew so something had to go .

Most of my films are from my DVD collection, movies that go on sale after Blockbuster has done with them in the used movie bin so a lot of them are 480p. I figure the detail doesn't matter to much unless its something like Tron Legacy, Prometheus, The Matrix, or Lord of The Rings where they are really shot well and deserve the HD experience. I've started buying 1 or 2 HD movies on iTunes recently since I bought my ATV3.

Lots of information here about tagging but how do you make that information available to AppleTV? Seems I recall you can only sort by genre, date or all. There is lots of detail available in iTunes but how do I use it in AppleTV? e.g. Rating, description, artist etc...

I just found MetaX and have added a few cover art pictures to my library. I have to say that I like it. Handbrake and MetaX play very nice together. I like how I can take any File ripped from Handbrake and embed any metadata I want. There is an option to edit metadata after the file is entered into ITunes, but I have not used that feature yet.

That is true, the only way to really get around this is to use smart playlists. I mostly use them for sorting by some of my favorite directors, but you can set them up for almost anything. It can be a bit time consuming to set them up, though.
