What is the best FREE editing software?

I have Photoshop on my PC but cannot justify the cost for amateur use for my Mac. What is the best completely FREE editing software. Preferable the complete software, not a trial of limited version. Also, I have the disk for Photoshop for my PC...would it work to try and load that to my Mac?

The best FREE photo editing software is the GIMP, but it's got an annoyingly clunky interface.

The best CHEAP photo editing software is Photoshop Elements.

I'm downloading GIMP right now, I'll see how it works out. Thanks.

You might want to see if there is an OS X version of gimpshop, it's still The Gimp but customized further to be more familiar with a photoshop-like layout.

If you are willing to spend a few bucks you may want to try pixelmator -$59.00

If you do a little searching, you'll find plenty of other threads here asking about free or low-cost graphics software. You might find some other useful information there.

Mad suggestion - get something like parallels/vmware (plus os) and run the software via virtualisation
