Apples BIG Mistake

I was browsing the apple store looking at Apple TVs and came across this

Thumb resize.
Click for larger

I noticed that they had boosted the memory and something about the iPhone. I kept the tab open and checked the main page for any news but i found none. I also went back to the store to the apple TV and it had changed again. I then realised that I had the window still open with the strange one. I took a screen. and posted it here, the first place I could think of. Tell me what you think...

Is this an Apple muck up?

Heres the things i noticed...

*160Gb and 320Gb hardrives. (this is quite possible as bigger hard drives have been in development recently)
*A new remote
*iPhone inertigation
*And finally i noticed the long awaited rumor of the Movie rentals (Near the bottom)

If you notice anything else please tell me.

If they really do that, that is incredibly stupid. Increase the price when they're already having trouble getting people to buy it? It needs to stay the same price or drop. I wouldn't pay for more hard drive space, it's pointless...I stream everything over the network, which is why I just bought a 40GB one. I couldn't care less about how big the hard drive is, and if they nudge the entry-level price above $299 they're going to have an even hard time getting people to buy into it.

That's interesting, there seems to be a price drop on iPod's across the board too..

I'm beginning to think this is a hoax?

I'll be real burned if I just bought a 160GB TV and they go upgrading them and dropping the price.

Thumb resize.

interesting. If they do make those changes I would be interested in them. I cannot see why anyone would need to upgrade to get the new features so the existing 40gb and 160gb should be able to do the new upgrades with a firmware change. Not the new remote of course. I also wonder why they would limit sync to the iPhone and touch unless they really want people to go that way. I always thought that iPod sync or at least connection with media navigation would have been a nice feature to have.

Iam sceptic but optomistic. I can see finally using the internal storage to store rented movies as I dont use it for anything but a few pictures which total less than .5gb.

An interesting developement I will be closing looking forward to. But I am not holding my breath.

For persistence reasons, it might be beneficial to have movie rentals stored on the tv directly, especially if those movies are in HD.

As such, 160GB or 320GB might be a desirable capacity.

Rumors has confirmed that a new, larger AppleTV flagship model will be added to the lineup along with two enhanced versions of the existing AppleTV devices -- all sporting larger hard drives. The new "AppleTV Unity" as it is sometimes referred to at Infinite Loop, will include a faster Intel CPU, enhanced media decoding DSP chipset, more RAM, an optical drive and numerous other improvements over the "standard" models. Details to follow: including hot dirt on whether the new AppleTV Optical Drive will support HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, or both (?!).....stay tuned!

strange that this screenshot confirms all current apple rumors except the 12" macbook pro.

anyway to play along: the ipod touch starts now at 229 instead of 299. that would be great!

What? it says 'iPod touch'. Click into the image.

Ahh, I see where you mean it. In the Apple TV description. Good eye.

Bogus.

"If it's on your Phone, its on Apple TV" should be "If it's on your iPhone, it's on Apple TV"...

A quick look at the existing page confirms it's a Photoshop hoax.

Yes there's a missing apostrophe in the sentence "It's and then "its" .. "

That and calling it a Phone, not iPhone.

Also that heading text color is R: 51, G: 51, B:51

The real header is R: 92, G: 112, B: 138.

Apple would not change this header and not the others.

Yeah, FAKE.

Ipod Touch?

2nd Gen?

Apple would NEVER put "2nd Gen" in their descriptions.

This is full of fail.

good eyes. Glad i wasnt holding my breath. lol

However the larger storage for movie rentals doesnt make that much sense either. The reason people rent a few movies at a time from a store is so they do not have to go back often. They can get a few and stretch it out a few days. if you have instant rentals why would you need to get more than 1 or 2 at a time which would fit, without extras, on a 40gb model and definately on a 160gb model. If what I read is true anyways, that most people stream instead of sync.

Ha ha - nice try, but you need to pay a bit more attention to detail next time you try this (Ipod Touch [sic] being the most obvious mistake )

Edit: aww damnit the guy above me posted about Ipod Touch beat me too it.
Also note the specs of the Apple TVs say "Sync up with your iPhone or Ipod Touch" should be iPod Touch. And also Apple would have said "The All New Apple Remote" not 2nd gen. Ohh and "Ships: Within 24 hours"? its not even been announced but you can get it next day :P

The ships within 24 hours would still make sense if the page went live. The new Macbooks shipped within 24 hours when the SR page went live.

Quite convincing overall except for a couple of things which make it an obvious fake. First, as mentioned above, you're never likely to see '2nd gen' as a description by Apple, and secondly, given the Apple TV uses a 2.5" Hard Drive, I don't think there's a 320GB drive on the market at the moment, 250GB seems to be the biggest.

I believe they announced a 320gb drive not too long ago. Not sure if its on market yet, but I know that it exists.

The font for the sizes of the drives is also non-apple. It's slightly different, cant quite pick up what font it is, but if you look at the existing apple site the font is different, so unless your browser shows all the fonts differently, then that's a huge tip off as well.

I wonder why, if people must do this, they go the photoshop route (apart from the question of why anyone would try a hoax at all). It's a lot easier to save the page to your computer and modify the html, then take a screen shot. That way you get the fonts and everything lined up properly.
