iPod touch How increase/decrease volume in Touch?

Noob question but how do you increase/decrease the volume in iPod Touch? Do you have to go to the Settings menu and adjust the volume from there? Cant you just adjust the volume when you listening to music?

I hope you understand.
 
cool feature: tap home twice, brings up music controls no matter what you are doing, nes, safari etc.
