Drive Enclosures in OSX

Let's say I have a 4-Bay External Hard Drive Enclosure and have all 4 drives in it. The enclosure is connected via Firewire to my Mac.

Will the drives come up as 4 external drives or 1 large one that'll have to be partitioned?

I think it will come up as 4 drives initially. Some of those multi-drive enclosures support RAID, so you could then configure that to get 1 large drive.
