I had the opportunity over Thanksgiving to speak with a friend of mine who works for Apple as well as a friend who works for nVidia (in a seperate discussion) to casually discuss some of the rumors going around this site... Actually, i didn't mention the site, just said it like I knew the buzz. Ha.

They both listened. The nVidia guy (he works there) said he didn't know much to confirm or deny anything, but knew there was a big stir of people he knows at Apple that have to work through Christmas to get "products" ready for the Apple Expo (MacWorld). That's all he really gave me. The Apple guy said that January was going to be big. Real big. He didn't say what exactly was going out, but did mention his Apple stock portfolio (apparently he gets a 15% discount) and that it would be really good on his porfolio for the January release.

I know this information is not enough to throw a bone at, but I thought I'd share it anyway. I got a smile from the Apple guy when I talked about how I thought the MacWorld keynote would go...

I mentioned
  • Mac Mini Upgrade (or replacement)
  • Mac Pro Upgrade (redesign / processor upgrade)
  • MacBook Upgrade (thin, iPhone-like)
  • iPhone/iPod Touch SDK

It was only after I had mentioned the above that he gave me a smile and told me it was going to be "big." He then admitted that they keep a lot of information internal to prevent leaks, but they do have a little internal rumor mill (more like little announcements) of their own, but even that stays pretty tight.

I didn't know if this would help anyone, but feel free to make your own predictions (i could be way off). Either way, it's going to be big according to someone from Apple. And when someone from Apple says something like that, then... well, not sure, but hey... it's a good sign we may be getting some new MacPros.

(i think I'll also be flying out to the MacWorld conf to pick it up). :D

3. I can believe that, i hope for it!

4. than only the preview...

Great predictions... You know, the only reason I think a Mac Mini upgrade is around the corner is from all the rumors that a replacement desktop may be around the corner (one that can take expansion cards, etc.. and still not be a puny mac mini or an all-in-one). Then again, Apple may want to bank on the iMac and do another modest upgrade to the Mac Mini itself.

I for one, as an IT specialist who has tried to convince creative engineers to go mac, who want expansion cards, but not willing to spend $3000 on a new computer, can see Apple coming with a small desktop version of the Mac Pro to replace the consumer PC.

Yeah.. Mac Pro, Mac Mini refreshes... NOT going to happen. They'll just be silent updates like the Macbook a few weeks ago.

Macworld 2008:

- iTunes store built in to AppleTV
- Built-in ATSC tuner/recorder
- 160GB $249, 250GB $299

One more thing?

Hoping for a lovely 12'' PB replacement. Then I could wait until my AppleCare runs out and order a v2 machine.

Wishful thinking, I know.

I can see maybe a minor refresh on the Mac Mini (or nothing at all), but I certainly see a Mac Pro update between now and January (haven't you been reading the forums?)

I love it.

Yeah... i think limiting the 12" laptop to just the MacBook was a smart decision by Apple. I remember as an IT consultant having many folks confused by Apple's iBook and Powerbook, so I'm glad Apple drew a line somewhere. I would be interested to see how Apple lines up on the MacBook touch.. there may be a 12" in there somewhere. That would be pretty slick. One could hope.

All of this stuff sounds great. But, if I were an employee of Apple and said that this year was going to be big, I would speculate something like the iPhone.... Seriously, if the iPhone was big, then you have to think that Apple will have yet another product that will make you say," I knew that I wanted that!"

That's the iMac.
Totally. I'm just thinking of those folks who already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc... and want to get a unit (like the mac mini, only bigger that can handle PCI cards or the like) to replace it. If that happened, I could convince more to switch to mac. Right now, the only alternatives for such a replacement are the Mac Mini and Mac Pro.

I know that the Mac Pro is due for an update and that people on here have been stupidly waiting a year for it. I never said it wasn't going to happen.. I said it wouldn't happen during the main keynote. They haven't announced any minor speed bumps at keynotes since the switch to Intel.

Everyone thought the MBPs were going to get updated to SR at WWDC this past summer, but they were silent refreshed the week before. They're only going to announce it at a conference if it's some radical changes, which it's not going to be.

i dont really know what to expect after last year iphone n alll that

the troubled part about is im going to university next year and MPB is perfect for absolutely everything i do

i want to know so badly if there are any revisions going to be made

im going to new york 1 week before macworld
which sucks...the prices are a lot lower

1. i want a new MPB :D

That's where we disagree. If the MacPro was going to get a silent upgrade, I believe it would have happened a week ago when the processor shipment came in. I'm pretty certain we're in for a surprise in the desktop arena.

Then again, what do we know.

piano keyboard input would be better than nothing if you had a sudden burst of inspiration that you needed to record and had no other type of midi input available, but it would be useless for anything other than the most basic playing. Most of the act of physically playing a keyboard is based on what you feel with your fingers, not what you see with your eyes.

What does the SDK in iphone SDK stand for?

Also, why would an Apple employee with the credentials to know what's on the horizon hint that he was looking forward to his stocks going up? Doesn't that teeter on potential for insider trading?

SDK = "Software Development Kit"... or "Software Developer Kit"

About the insider trading thing... im not sure. He talked about his 15% discount and how he was planning this and that with his stocks... im really not into that, nor did i care.

I agree.

Not to rain on the parade here, but ...
new poster who joined this month + 'insider info at Apple' + predictions of new products = yawwwnnnn
Thanks chief.

AppleTV needs an update

Mac Mini needs a real update

Portable MBP would be a good option

3G iPhone
Here, here. Especially on the 3G. Don't see it coming, but hey... one can speculate.
